Welcome to Fall Semester
at Fast Track! By Dena Taylor
The Fast Track
EARN THE NECESSARY SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES THAT WILL GET
YOU HIRED IN YOUR DREAM JOB.
A big welcome to all new and returning students in the Fast Track To
Work program! As you work your
way through the construction and
confusion, just remember that Fast
Track and all other student services
are here to make your time at
Cabrillo as pleasant and as meaningful as possible.
As many of you know, Fast Track
now offers personal counseling by
Barbara Stymiest and job-search
counseling by Renee DeMar. And
this semester we have two new academic counselors who will be helping you with your educational plans:
Shelly Skye and Claire Rubach. Our
Human Resources Agency workers,
Katie Limas and Edith Ruiz, are here
to provide HRA services and answer
your questions about CalWORKs
eligibility.
When you walk into our front office
in room 802, you’ll be greeted by
Lori Pirtle, Donna Ghimenti, Alicia
Hernandez or Angie Mendez – all of
whom are ready to help you. And
you may see Roberta Higuet sitting
at her computer, working on special
projects for Fast Track (like this
newsletter).
Our accomplishments this past year
include our first Fast Track graduation held in May; our collaboration
with the Cabrillo Children's Center to
provide summer child care for CalWORKs students’ children; collaboration with the Ladders Project in
presenting a Health Careers Forum at
Dominican Hospital; (continued on pg. 3)
How to get your Dream Job
Just talk to any student who completed the Career Ladder Summer
Institute, and they will tell you that
not only is it possible to get a dream
job, but they are immediately going
out into our community to create it
for themselves. All students are
gaining knowledge at Cabrillo College in specific fields, but unless you

also know the skills that will get you
the job, you may not quite connect
with the job of your dreams.
If you are one of the many students
lacking job search skills, be sure to
make room in your schedule for
these workshops and classes in the
future. ( Continued on next page)

How to get your Dream Job
(Continued from front page)
These are the skills that will market you effectively
while in job search for the rest of your working life.
Plus the fact that not many students know these
skills, which means you will beat out the competition. So don’t forget to include it in your educational plan. I’ve heard more than once from students that these classes make a huge difference in
their lives.

skills that will get you the job,
you may not quite connect with
the job of your dreams.”

work part-time as an academic counselor. Previous

looking forward to the fall when I’ll get to know
more FTTW students, and we can work together to
plan your academic program.

THE FAST TRACK
Welcome to Fall Semester 2000 (cont. from front page)
the implementation of Renee’s workshops for Fast
Track Student Employment workers; and the development of a contract allowing CalWORKs students
to receive Student Employment money while working for off campus for-profit employers
We are also in the midst of a pilot project that involves follow-up on our recent graduates to see
what kind of jobs they are getting, what they are
getting paid, and what their advancement opportunities are.
Our immediate goal here at Fast Track is to provide friendly, helpful service to our students. This
includes help with registration, academic and personal counseling, access to HRA workers, jobs on
and off campus, preparation for getting, keeping
and advancing in a job, and money for childcare.
Our long term goal is to help our students into jobs
and careers that pay family-supporting wages.
We’re here for you, and we welcome your comments and suggestions.
We’re in room 802, open 8-5 Monday through
Thursday, and 8-12 on Fridays. Our phone number
is 479-6344. We look forward to seeing you!

Joining the Fast Track Team by Shelly Skye.
I am pleased to be joining the Fast Track team here
at Cabrillo College. I began working at Cabrillo
College within the Disabled Students Programs and
Services office. There I specialized in working with
Deaf adults, students with learning disabilities and
individuals with psychological disabilities. From
there I went to the Women’s Center where I codirected the program for one year while it was in
transitional period. I then worked for the next four
years with students who were interested in nursing
careers.
can be of assistance to a wide variety of individuals. Please come in and introduce yourself so I can
begin to get to know you and develop the relationships which make my job so enjoyable.
Previous to my years here at Cabrillo College, I
worked in various non-traditional positions in the
building trades as well as emergency services.
Some of the positions I held were Ocean Lifeguard,
Equipment Technician and Maintenance Director at
a rural Girl Scout camp. While I enjoyed learning
all of these jobs, I found I needed the mental stimulation one has when working more directly with
people. As you can see, I have had a varied career
the trades as well as at Cabrillo College and feel I
