Playing Places and Performances in
Elizabethan and Jacobean England
Essay questions.
Choose one of the following:
1) Choose one or two episodes/scenes/scenarios/entertainments/plays
written (or devised) for performance.
With close reference to your chosen example(s), document the
circumstances of the original performance(s) in as much detail as
possible. It will be helpful to establish the general circumstances of
the performance(s), including social, political, historical and/or
cultural information, as the basis for more specific, detailed
analysis of your chosen example(s).
2) Outline and evaluate the evidence that has survived
concerning any one or two playing places and/or groups of players
(playing/acting companies). Giving specific examples indicate
how such evidence can help us in our study of individual plays or
entertainments.
