Teaching + Technology = Improved Student Success
Members of the Math Department will share how LectureScribe and a personal response system are used in the
classroom and for distance education. Have you ever needed to make lectures available to your students but didn’t
think a handout would do it justice? Then consider using LectureScribe. With LectureScribe students will be able
to hear your voice and see what you have written on a virtual whiteboard. A few tablet PCs will be available to
get hands on experience. We will demonstrate classroom use of a personal response system (PRS) to test students’
understanding of concepts and knowledge of subject matter with immediate feedback to the instructor. The PRS
can be used in any subject where questions may be posed as True/False or multiple choice so it is applicable to

Revitalizing
Learning
Communities for
Student Success
In higher education, curricular learning
communities are classes that are linked
or clustered during an academic term,
enroll a common cohort of students,
and are often supported through dedicated counseling and peer tutoring and
mentoring time. Educational research
has shown learning communities to be
effective structures for students at the
basic skills level, as well as students
new to institutions of higher learning. Participants will discuss past efforts
to implement learning communities in
English, Reading, Math, and Counseling
and Guidance at Cabrillo, as well as ongoing work with the Emerging Scholars
Advisory Committee to renew and revitalize this effective practice for a possible First Year Experience program for
incoming Basic Skills Students.

Guidelines for Flex
The flex calendar affords faculty the time and format
in which to examine instructional concerns outside
the traditional classroom setting. It offers an appropriate prelude to the school year as well as a checkpoint
between semesters to refresh our sense of educational
mission. This publication is your guide to the principles and process of staff development flex days at
Cabrillo College. If you have any questions after
reading it, please consult with your Dean or the Staff
Development Coordinator.
General Guidelines:
1. Required flex time:
Faculty may fulfill their flex requirement by attending
workshops on flex days, participating in advisement at
registration, or performing individual projects on designated flex days. Any exceptions to this policy must be
approved by your Dean.
Full-time faculty have a minimum time commitment
of 24 flexible hours per year plus two fall semester
mandatory days and one spring semester mandatory
day.
Partial contract faculty are required to participate
in a specific number of days, which is prorated on a
percentage basis of an individual’s contract. Adjunct faculty
are required to participate in at least one hour of flex activity
per teaching unit each semester.
2. Special exception:
You may perform flex activities on days other than the
scheduled flex days, as long as they are not your regular
teaching days. Weekends and holidays are permissible as are
days when you are only teaching in the evening, or evenings
when you are only teaching during the day. You must obtain
approval of your Dean.
3. Deadlines:
The deadline for submitting your flex agreement is the end
of flex week. This contract needs to be signed by you and
your Dean. The deadline for submitting your individual
activity is the end of flex week. This contract needs to be
signed by you and your Dean.
4. Nonparticipation:
Should you decide to refuse to participate in the flex week,
you will have your pay reduced by the number of days of
nonparticipation (maximum of five days fall semester and
four days spring semester). All flex activities must be completed within the academic calendar.

Members of the Foreign Language Department will work with Dr. Breiner-Sanders after the department meeting.
With DVD segments and writing samples in English, Spanish, French, and other languages, she will demonstrate
activities on various levels derived from specific films and from film as a contextual pedagogical construct. Dr.
Breiner-Sanders has directed the Spanish summer school at Middlebury College, and has taught language courses
as well as seminars on violence, human rights and colliding images in Latin America. She has conducted workshops
throughout the country on proficiency-oriented instructional design. She is an ACTFL tester and trainer. Her current project is a book on Hispanic cinema and content-based instruction.

Join Us for a Three-Day
On Course I Workshop
A Festival for
Learner-Centered Educators
Jonathan Brennan, Facilitator
A GREAT
PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT EVENT
The On Course I Workshop is a highly experiential professional development event designed to provide you with dozens of innovative strategies
for empowering your students to become active, responsible and successful
learners. These are different strategies than those presented in the 2-day event
last Spring Flex week.
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
8:30-4:30 each day, with an optional session (6:00-9:00) on the second
evening. You’ll hear more about the
optional session at the workshop.
These learner-centered strategies—representing best practices from innovators in higher education, business, psychology, sports and personal
effectiveness—help students become full and active partners in their own
education.
Breakfast and lunch will be served
each day. Participants should plan
on attending all three days.
Strategies presented in this workshop improve both student academic
success and retention. View data from a number of college and universities at www.OnCourseWorkshop.com (click on DATA).
Join us for this major on-campus professional development event and learn
proven methods for empowering your students to achieve their greatest
potential in college…and beyond.
Contact Diane Putnam at:
diputnam@cabrillo.edu
by August 31 to reserve your spot.
Workshop will take place on-campus, in rooms TBA.
It is no exaggeration to say this workshop experience was transformative—both professionally and personally. This workshop will
long remain a high point of my life. I am feeling energized and eager to start teaching my class next week. I can’t wait to use
all of my new teaching tools. I will absolutely recommend this workshop to other educators!

Digital Bridge Academy’s Faculty Experiential Learning Institute
The Faculty Experiential Learning Institute (FELI) is an experiential institute that exposes
participants to core exercises and curriculum used in the nine-day Foundation Course that
is currently taught to students during the first two weeks of the Digital Bridge Academy’s
(DBA) Integrated Bridge Semester at Cabrillo College.
As of summer 2008, more than 120 faculty from twenty colleges in California have attended
one of the four FELI workshops. The results have been positive, and faculty members have
especially valued the opportunity to build a community on campus, to discuss teaching with
other instructors, and to develop new tools and understanding for working with students,
especially students who come from poverty.
Participants have included Cabrillo faculty members from many disciplines, ranging from English and Math to Basic
Skills, Biology, Chemistry, CIS, Counseling, Dance, History, Early Childhood Education, and Sociology.
If these opportunities interest you, please contact Beth Nelson, DBA Program Manager for additional information at
benelson@cabrillo.edu or 477-3272.
