PQ 373: Report on Error in Q7 of Paper 1 of Advanced Matsec Chemistry May
2008 Examination
Matsec examination papers are routinely checked by a Reviser who is a person appointed
specifically for the purpose who is not part of the team of examination setters. This year,
Matsec Board could not identify a person who was eligible, qualified, sufficiently
experienced and, moreover, willing to participate in the process of review and for this
reason the paper was not subjected to the high level of scrutiny typical of the review
process. A person who was not eligible to be involved this year has already been
identified for next year.
All student scripts in Paper 1 which contained the error in question 7 have since been
closely examined. It was found that the great majority of students addressed the question
by giving improvised answers compatible with the data provided and this actually suggests
that they may not have noticed the error. A very small minority did notice the error and
corrected for it in their answers. Very few candidates did not write answers to the question
but these same students also left out completely several other questions.
The University has already declared that students will be awarded full marks for question
7 to ensure that no one, including those who attempted the question, is penalised on
account of the error.
11
Detailed additional report about the error in Question 7 of Paper 1 and the findings
of the Chairman of the Markers Panel
The examination consisted of nine structured questions and candidates had to write in the
spaces provided on the paper itself. No extra writing material was provided. Question 7
carried 15 marks and candidates were expected to spend between 25 and 30 minutes on
this question.
In this question, the word ‘butan-1-ol’ should have appeared instead of the word ‘ethanol’.
This mistake rendered parts (a), (e) and (f) of the question very ambiguous or impossible
to solve but left unaffected parts (b), (c) and (d).
All the scripts in Paper I of the 421 candidates who took the examination were inspected.
Four candidates wrote on the script that they thought a mistake was present and decided to
assume (correctly) that the name of the alcohol should have been butan-1-ol and worked
through the problem on this assumption.
Another six candidates chose to answer the question by implicitly assuming the alcohol to
be either ethanol or butan-1-ol and gave complete (mostly correct) answers without
making any written comments on the paper.
A few candidates did not attempt the question at all but these candidates also omitted
several other items from the other eight questions and gave generally poor answers to
Paper I.
The vast majority of candidates (over 90%) interpreted the data given in the problem
literally and gave solutions based on the presumption that the experimental information as
described could produce the result that the question predicated.
On this basis, improvised solutions were in fact provided to parts (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) of
the question; for the harder sub-question (f) which carried 4 of the 15 marks, candidates
either (i) opted to skip this part (a few) or (ii) to select, at random, either ethanol or 1butanol as the basis for their answer.
Not one of the scripts revealed any evidence of panic writing or confusion as would have
been indicated by crossed-out workings and repeated calculations typical of indecision on
the part of the examinee. Candidates appeared to have tackled the question confidently
despite the challenge presented by the mistake.
One candidate wrote the following words in the margins: ‘mistake in paper??’ and ’30
minutes wasted??’ ‘should butan-1-ol’ & ethanol replace each other here?’ This candidate
completed the examination and scored a total mark which, if repeated in Paper II and
Paper III will result in an overall score of Grade A.
In conclusion, in view of the evidence, it appears that candidates were not harmed by this
mistake. No candidate appeared to have spent more than the allotted time on this question
(approximately 30 minutes) and the few examination scripts that were handed in with
incomplete answers clearly belonged to the weaker candidates most of whom did not even
tackle question 7. It is likely that most candidates will actually benefit from the fact that
full marks will be given for the question since, from past experience, the better candidates
would have been expected to obtain between 8 and 9 marks out of 15 in such a question.

bħal fi snin oħra l-eŜaminaturi tal-matematika u tal-fiŜika qagħdu attenti biex ikun hemm
bilanë bejn mistoqsijiet diffiëli u oħrajn inqas diffiëli u biex il-livell ikun jixbaħ kemm

Kemm kienet kbira l-popolazzjoni ta’ studenti li setgħu jpoāāu għal dan l-eŜami?
