Different divisions have different review processes.
Contact program officer of your field to get more
information
Likely: a panel in the division reviews almost
proposals, programs within a division will make the
recommendation.
What factors will effect the program: # of CAREER
proposals received (by the program), other
proposals received by the program, ranking in the
panel, and impact and priorities within the program.
Secrets for Success
Who are reading the proposal?
z
Reviewers type I: Experts in your field (really know what is
going on)
z
New and original ideas
z
Reviewers Type II: Not expert in your field, but in nearby field.
z
Sound, succinct, detailed focused plan
z
NSF program officers in your program or not in your program.
z
Should never assume the reviewers know how important the
research is! (what is the context and scope?)
z
Preliminary data and/or feasibility calculation
z
Relevant experience
z
Good ideas without concrete plans will never be enough.
(Vague?)
z
Clarity concerning future direction
z
How should they trust you? Build track-record (both
intellectual merit and broader impacts)
z
Well-articulated broader impacts
