Jeffrey B. Kaplan Biographical sketch 10/9/12 Kaplan received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1979, and a Ph.D. in Biology from the same institution in 1985. After three years of postdoctoral training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Columbia University, he worked for ten years in the Oncology Research section at Wyeth/Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Kaplan joined the faculty of the Department of Oral Biology at New Jersey Dental School in 1999. In 2012, he became Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at American University. Kaplan has published 58 research articles, six review articles and two book chapters, primarily in the fields of oral microbiology and bacterial pathogenesis. His work has been cited more than 2,500 times (h-­‐index = 28). Over the past 10 years, Kaplan’s lab has received more that $2 million in funding from government and industrial sources including the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, and Genentech. Kaplan has lectured at more than 25 universities and scientific meetings in North America and Europe. He was named a Top 10 Scientist by New Jersey Business magazine in 2008 and a Fulbright Scholar in 2009. He is an inventor on two patents and six patent applications, and he serves on the scientific advisory boards of two biotech companies. He has also served as a reviewer for more than 30 scientific journals as well as several grant funding agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust.
