My name is Liangliang. There are five people in my family: my father, mother,
two brothers and me. Mum and Dad work every day on weekdays. On Saturdays,
our whole family go out for a day travelling. On Sundays we stay at home to do
some house chores. My dad is responsible for washing the car, my mother is
responsible for washing dishes and doing the laundry, I am re sponsible for
sweeping the living room floor, my brothers help dad to wash the car.
At home, I often help to look after my two younger brothers: one is 10 and the
other is 11. Sometimes I help them to do their homework.
Every Wednesday evening, I go to Brownies. I like the Brownie activities very
much. We have a lot of community service, and sometimes I help to sweep the
floor in the community centre. Sometimes I help with community activities. We
also often go hill walking. I like hill walking because the air is very fresh and
the view is very beautiful.
Every Friday afternoon, I go to the hospital as a volunteer. I like to help the
patients because I want to be a doctor in future. Today in the hospital I saw an
old lady. She does not have children and she is sick. A nurse asked me to read
stories to her. I read her a very moving story. She liked the story very much. I
feel so happy that I was able to help.
My name is Dongdong. There are three people in my family: my dad, my mum
and me. My father is an engineer, my mother is a teacher. I am a 16 -year-old
secondary school student. I like swimming and I often take part in swimming
competitions. On Saturdays, we often have friends come around to my house.
Sometimes we go hill walking or biking. On Sundays, we visit museums or
friends. We don’t have lots of house chores: my father does the cooking, my
mum does the cleaning, and I set the table before the meal.
I often help in the community as a volunteer. I also help in the school’s charity.
Last summer I took part in the Tesco Great Run. Money was raised to help sick
kids. I like to play the cello. My dream is to go to Africa and play the cello to
orphanage children. Because I think music is the most beautiful thing, I want to
bring beautiful music to the orphanage children to make them happy.

Battleship game
How to play
You and your opponent each have three battleships. E ach ship is no bigger than
one square. Hide your sheet from your opponent then draw your three
battleships, one in each of three squares of your choice using the sheet on the
next page. Keep your fleet location secret from your opponent! When each
player has marked their fleet on their grid, begin play.
To ‘shoot’ at your opponent’s fleet you need to indicate where you think one of
their battleship is by guessing its grid location. To do this you read out one
sentence from the list along the top and one se ntence from the list along the side.
The square where the columns and rows leading from the sentences intersect is
the location of the square where you think a battleship might be. Your opponent
must say whether the shot is a ‘miss’ (失敗) or a ‘hit’ (擊中). If it is a ‘hit’ the
ship is sunk.
Play continues until one player wins by successfully sinking the whole of the
other player’s fleet.
Strategy tips
 When choosing where to place your ships, remember that your opponent
might not be keen to try and say some of the harder sentences.
 Keep a record of squares you have already shot at by marking your sheet.

Taiwan’s culture
Many foreign friends come to Taiwan. When walking down street they will see
some red lights inside people’s houses. The foreigners feel very curious. The
red lights are on the altar and are used to worship G od or the ancestors.
(Religious) belief is part of Taiwanese life, so, many people have red lights in
their houses to worship their ancestors and God at home.
‘Da baiabi’ literally means ‘large worship’. Taiwan’s ‘Da baibai’ is very
interesting. ‘Da baibai’ is a kind of religious activity among local people. Inside
temples, there are lots of people making good wishes; it is very busy in the
temples. In some cases, there are also some culture activities outside the
temples. There are performances and cultural activities, such as dance, drama,
martial arts and so on.
Some people have special beliefs, such as marriage depends on names and dates
of birth, buying a house depends on feng shui. When difficulties occur, people
will search for a fortune teller to tell them what to do. Some people say that this
is superstition, but many people also feel at ease and safe because of the beliefs
they have.

「Jason」

Young people in Hong Kong: anti-drugs
In Hong Kong, there is a drama called 903, performed by young people. This
drama has three main characters: Coke, Matches and Jason. They are three
young people from different families. They live in different environments and
encounter many problems, such as lack of warmth in family life, emotional
problems, pressures of work and so on. Often they encounter the temptation of
drugs.
During the performance the audience can join in to express their views. Some
people say Coke should refuse drugs. Some people think that Match es should
not be taking drugs with friends. Some of the audience can also provide some
solutions to the problems. In addition, some of the audience could play the role
of Jason’s good friends, give their own life experiences about taking drugs and
advise Jason to stay away from drugs.
After the performance, one of young addicts demonstrates to the audience how
drugs can harm your health, and also tells everyone his experience of drug
treatments.
Many secondary students went to see these theatrical performances. The
students understand deeply how harmful the drugs can be. They also all know
that drugs are addictive and that they affect our health.
The anti-drug performance encourages students to establish a healthy life and
say goodbye to drugs. This form of drama is used to convey anti -drug messages;
it is vivid and also interesting. Students can also participate in the discussion
and express their views, helping them to think and enabling them to make a
better decision when they may be tempted by drugs.
This is very useful. It helps young people to develop a healthy self-confidence
and interest, and also to gain drug-related knowledge. The students like the
performance very much.

I live in a suburb of Edinburgh. Our neighbours are friendly. My neighbour
always gives me presents when there is a seasonal festival.
Last Christmas, she gave me a CD. In the winter, because the weather is cold,
we rarely see each other. In the summer, as the weather is a bit warmer, we
often see each other in the garden. We like chatting to each other in the garden.
Sometimes, when we go on holiday, our neighbour will look after our house.
When they go on holiday, we will look after t heir house.
Our neighbour are also very warm hearted and friendly. Once, when I was sick,
our neighbour came to see me and also brought me flowers.
Our neighbour used to have a dog. The dog was very old. I used to walk the dog
for the neighbour. One day, it died. The neighbour and I felt very sad.
Our neighbour has a little girl; sometimes I help to take care of her. I like
singing and dancing with the little girl. She calls me ‘sister’.
I think it is very important to have good neighbours because neighbours can
help you a lot. I am very happy because I have very warm -hearted and quiet
neighbours.
