DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
Diagnostic testing
At the end of this activity you should:
 be able to describe the processes of amniocentesis and chorionic villus
sampling (CVS)
 know what is meant by a karyotype
 know that CVS has a higher risk of miscarriage than amniocentesis
 know that karyotyping on cells obtained from CVS can be carried out
immediately; cells from amniocentesis need to be cultured first
 be able to identify when a karyotype shows the individual has a genetic
disorder.
Read the two booklets and make notes on CVS and amniocentesis. Diagrams
may be useful.
