REASONS FOR CRIME
Many young people, especially in deprived areas, find themselves with time on their
hands but lack the money to spend on entertainment or leisure.
When hanging around with no real purpose the opportunity to get involved in crime
can become irresistible e.g. vandalism, fighting or joyriding.
The need to follow what everyone else in your group of friends is doing can be very
powerful. If a person does not do what the rest of the group does they can face
ridicule, threats or even exclusion from the group.
If an individual is involved with under-age drinkers or other criminals there is a
danger of giving into the pressure of this group. This can also link to ‘gang culture’.
Boredom and peer pressure can be a very powerful combination!
