The minutes and agenda from January 10, 2014 were approved.
Current Issues
Smoking on Campus
The current Board Policy on Smoking was presented again: AP 3570. It does not address the future
subcommittees recommendations. The subcommittee has not yet been formed.
Action Items
o Task force needs to be put together
Skateboarders/Safety on Concrete Edges
Sesario and Oscar brought up the skatestoppers that are used at Foothill and UCSC colleges. Oscar has
already been looking into this. It was proposed to install the metal ‘L’s (skatestoppers) in Allied Health
area and near SAC East and West.
Issues that were discussed were safety and the markings that it leaves on the concrete. Tasha stated
that on a Sunday she has observed 15-20 skateboarders at Bldg. 600. Jason recommended a rumble
surface.
Action Items
o Oscar/Vikkee to work on ordering the skatestoppers and getting them installed. Desired
timeframe: 30 days.
Dangerous Crosswalk
Sandy Moore wrote a memo that was presented to the committee regarding the dangerous crosswalk
situation across from the Farm Restaurant (South Parameter Road/Soquel Drive). Joe has looked at
putting a signal at that intersection in the past. The cost was approximately $200k. The College would
be responsible for this cost as it is considered a business. Owen Miller recommended putting up a
pedestrian sign. Byron Cornwell proposed flashing lights that are on the ground like near Soquel fire
station. Michelle said that she has seen this present a false sense of security at the Soquel/fire station
crosswalk.
Action Items
o Joe/Oscar are going to ask Skyler (Grounds Dept.) to look at the trees there and see what can
be cut back.
Renumbering Campus
Joe is working on a campus renumbering project. One of the safety issues that was brought up was
during an accident in December an ambulance went to the wrong building because the numbering is
the same at some of the buildings.
Sesario recommended naming buildings. FDO in the past has tried naming and then numbering which
is where the confusion/duplication of numbers sometimes occurs.
Owen Miller said that when a single change is made to any of the numbering or maps there needs to
be a procedure in place to provide the updates to Aptos Fire, Central Fire, and AMR.
Tasha recommends when you place a 911 call having other people up in a visible area helping direct
traffic. She also recommends scripting the 911 verbage.
Action Items
o Owen Miller/Oscar will call Mike DeMars with Central Fire and make sure he is giving updates
to AMR
Possible Keynote Speaker – Lucinda Roy
Sesario presented an idea to the committee of having Lucinda Roy, Professor at Virginia Tech.
University come during All College day as a keynote speaker to get as large attendance as possible to
the event. She will come for $3k if she can do a book signing. HSACCC partnership (Katie Dowling).
The committee was in support of the idea of having her as a speaker.
He then stated that the obstacle was moving All College day from Monday back to Friday because she
is unable to speak on a Monday due to a class she teaches. It was also proposed on possible doing this
on a different day. All College Day is scheduled for Monday, August 25th.
Joe suggested asking Laurel and presenting this to the Staff Development committee (Francine Van
Meter).
Action Items
o Sesario to have Dennis bring to Cabinet .
Update from Subcommittee Chairs
Regulatory and Hazmat Environmental Compliance Subcommittee
Nothing new was reported.
Safety, Health and Injury
Safety:
Sue Torres reported that there had been a fairly large number of trip and fall incidents in
December/January. Owen Miller recommended sending out an all email regarding this and reminding
people to be careful to watch their step, not text and walk, etc.
Emergency Disaster Preparedness
Joe said that they have installed generated power circuitry in SAC 225 so if we lose power it will stay
on.
The county has also added an antenna for 2 way radios at Horticulture.
Other things discussed were the IT web updates, Google Docs updates, new building stewards.
Oscar and Joe shared that the Maintenance and Operations Department had received kudos for
Emergency Prep Training and that it had also been provided to the Custodial Crew. Something that
came up through this training was to try and ensure a tighter link between the day crew and night
crew.
Sesario asked Oscar to do the Shooter on Campus presentation for AGS on February 20th.
Action Items
o Sue Torres and Joe to provide a list of items to purchase for Emergency Prep
