Job Summary:
The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Kansas State University invites applications and nominations for the position of
Director. This 12-month tenured position will begin on July 7, 2016. The School has approximately 220 undergraduate Music majors pursuing the B.M.,
B.A., and B.M.E. degrees; 36 graduate Music students pursuing M.M. degrees; 85 Theatre majors pursuing the B.A. and B.S. degrees; 20 graduate
Theatre students pursuing the M.A degree; and offers minors in Music, Theatre, and Dance. The School has 38 full-time and 18 part-time faculty, is
supported by an Associate Director for each of the three areas of Music, Theatre, and Dance and by three full-time administrative staff members.
The city of Manhattan, where Kansas State is located, is situated in the rolling Flint Hills of Northeast Kansas, 125 miles west of Kansas City via Interstate
70. Five miles north of the city is Tuttle Creek Reservoir, one of the largest in the Midwest. The 668-acre campus is convenient to both business and
residential areas.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will be appointed as a tenured faculty member in one
of the programs of Music, Theatre, or Dance at K-State and have a
demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, research/creative activity, and
service appropriate to the rank of associate or full professor. A terminal degree
in an area of Music, Theatre, or Dance is required. The area of specialization
is open, and some teaching will be expected, in coordination with the interest
of the candidate and the needs of the School. The candidate must: 1) have
demonstrated capabilities for leadership and organizational abilities at the
college or university level; 2) have a proven ability to build consensus among
faculty and students while promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity; 3)
demonstrate an ability to serve as an effective advocate for the School to
university administration and internal and external constituencies such as the
Foundation, Advisory Council, McCain Performance Series, and local
community; and 4) demonstrate a commitment to the assessment of student
learning and quality teaching at all levels.
Responsibilities:
The Director serves as the administrative head of the School of Music,
Theatre, and Dance with oversight of its faculty, staff, curriculum, budget,
facilities, accreditation, annual evaluation, and strategic planning.
The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is accredited by NASM and NAST
and is housed within the College of Arts & Sciences, the “intellectual and
academic core of the University” with 24 academic units. A land-grant
institution, Kansas State University is a Carnegie “Very High Research” and
“Engaged” University serving 25,000 students with more than 4,000 students
who participate in curricular and co-curricular activities offered through the
School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
Other required qualifications include strong interpersonal, written and verbal
communication skills, the ability to relate to individuals of diverse backgrounds,
and previous administrative experience managing budgets, personnel, and
fundraising. The successful applicant will exhibit innovative thinking about the
School’s ongoing programmatic development and resource challenges and will
understand and participate in friend-raising and fundraising to support the
School.
