Participant Selection Criteria: Selection of participants and alternates will be chosen based on the following criteria: Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must be registered as an engineering major at Cabrillo College. Applicants must have been and are full-time students during the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters, respectively, advancing in your required transfer coursework. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent U.S. resident or an international student with an embassy/consulate/interest section of your country in Guatemala (contact Anna Zagorska with any questions, anzagors@cabrillo.edu). Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Applicant must have completed ENGR 5 and ENGR 25 by the end of the Fall 2015 semester. Applicant must have completed at least 30 units of lower division engineering major core courses (math, physics, chemistry, computer science, and engineering) by the end of the Fall 2015 semester. Applicant must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in overall courses as well as in the major core courses. Attendance, participation, and completion of assignments are required in order to participate on the Guatemala experience. Alternates are also required to attend, but do not need to complete the assignments. Abroad participants will be required to attend post-trip meetings scheduled on Fridays, 1:00 – 3:00 pm during the Spring 2017 semester to disseminate the information about our Guatemala experience to Cabrillo, the local community and national engineering organizations through presentations and published articles. Anyone missing any two scheduled meetings or being late twice to scheduled meetings will be dropped from the travel and an alternate in good standing will be selected. This abroad program has a lot of requirements; if you do not feel you will be able to satisfy them all, please do not apply. Other Selection Criteria (but not limited to): Service to Cabrillo student organizations or non-Cabrillo community organizations Past and current leadership positions held Communication and interpersonal skills Language skills Engineering experience either through work or extra-curricular activities Interest in sustainability Interest in engineering as a helping profession Interest in travel, culture, and learning about globalization Personal Record Review Disciplinary records and law enforcement records of those students applying will be reviewed. Requirements for Travel The two-week abroad program in Guatemala is scheduled for late December 2016 to mid-January 2017. The actual traveling dates may shift depending on airfare, availability of plane tickets, and other factors. Deposit Selected participants must provide a $400 deposit to secure your spot within one week of notification. If you fail to satisfy all trip requirements (pre-trip, trip, and post-trip) or drop out early, the deposit will not be returned. Cost Participants will be responsible for $650. Participation in the Engineering Abroad Club will help with fundraising these additional costs or you will be responsible for paying the cost yourself. For more information, please go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html. Failure to obtain the necessary passport by October 15, 2016 will result in disqualification for the trip. Vaccination Requirements Applicants are required to visit http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/list.aspx for details about the Center for Disease Control (CDC) vaccination recommendations for travel to Guatemala. The participant is strongly recommended to visit a travel doctor and receive the vaccinations recommended by CDC. (We will discuss this further once the applicants have been selected.) Health Requirements The applicant must be in good health at the time of application and immediately before the trip. If the applicant develops a medical condition after being selected as a participant, s/he must inform the Engineering Department upon diagnosis. Insurance Requirements Participants will be required to have international health and travel insurance (included in flight). College Liability Waiver The applicant must agree to sign a waiver form releasing Cabrillo College from all possible liability claims. Required Student Code of Conduct We will review all Cabrillo College Abroad Rules once participants have been selected.
