Number of majors has increased from 82 five years ago to 138
Spring 2012 (latest stats from PRO). This is the largest number
of majors in the history of the department. With new
requirement that students all file an Ed plan and declare a
major, these numbers are likely to increase significantly.
Latest figures show 145 minors (10 completed units of
Communication Studies courses) F '2011-Spring 2012.
Departmental demand is enormous. After 4 days of registration
for Spring 2013 semester, ALL standard courses (Comm 1, 2,
4, 7, 10, & 12) were completely full (the highest percentage of
total class sections closed of any program on campus--1st out
of 70 programs). Aggregate students waitlisted stood at 325
after 4 days of registration--also 1st among the 70 programs
offered. Yet our total TUs have been slightly reduced.
Communication Studies has the highest demand of any
program at Cabrillo--1st in demand. Nevertheless, a
replacement for our retiring full-time faculty member, Kanda
Whaley, was denied. A FULL-TIME REPLACEMENT
POSITION IS ESSENTIAL! Demand is so spectacularly high
that 20 sections each term (40 annually) could be added if
resources were provided.
Although some minimal improvements have been made, such
as more smart room technology, classroom space is not
improved. New student desks have been provided, but rooms
410 & 411 are very tight spaces. Room 1091 has smart room
technology, but the design is cumbersome and the technology
is immobile.
Unlikely unless Communication Studies gets a new building

The program is bursting at the seams. Facilities are inadequate.
Demand is overwhelming. Patchwork facilities provided after the
move from the 800 building are just that--patchwork. Nothing has
been specifically designed to meet the unique needs of the program.
Big losers are the students.

The Communication Studies department was given the prestigious
program more widely
"Model Communication Program" award for 2012 by the Western
States Communication Association. Yet, the college still appears to
view the department as small and deserving of limited resources. That
has got to change.
SLO Assessment Progress: In a sentence or two, describe where your department should be on the Revolving Wheel of Assessment (what
assessment you should have done in the last year) and what was actually done. If you’re not sure where you should be on the Revolving Wheel
contact the SLO Coordinator (x6366). If any task was not completed, explain why.
Comm 1, 2, 4, 10, and 14 have all been assessed. Remaining courses will finish assessment spring 2013. Faculty members are overwhelmed
with work trying to keep up with overloaded classes, committee work, program development, making facilities in the 400 building work to meet
unique needs, etc. It will get done when it becomes possible.
Fill out the Assessment Results section below.
