About the Course
The Bachelors of Arts (Honours) in Early
Childhood Education and Care—B.A. (Hons)
ECEC—will enable graduates to work in the
early years sector. This new undergraduate
degree addresses the needs of young children
and their families as well as the latest educational
requirements set by the Ministry for Education
and Employment.
The B.A. (Hons) ECEC is a three-year full-time
course, which will enable graduates to:

Work with children aged 3—5 years old
•
Enrol in the Master in Teaching and
Learning (MTL) in Early Childhood and
Primary Education
This degree offers undergraduate students the
opportunity to develop a critical understanding
of the current practices and philosophies related
to young children’s ways of playing, learning
and meaning-making. Undergraduates engage
in a variety lectures, discussions, experiences,
fieldwork and workshops on aspects of early years
pedagogy, psychology, philosophy and sociology.
Through a number of practicums, undergraduates
will work in a practical way with young children
where they will be able to apply and link theory to
practice, developing an understanding of their role
as Early Years professionals.

The Department of Early Childhood
and Primary Education
The Department of Early Childhood and
Primary Education is responsible for designing
and delivering programmes that specialise in
the teaching and learning of children from
birth to eleven years. Through programmes that
address Early Childhood Education and Primary
Content, the Department aims to enable initial
certification students to become knowledgeable
Early Childhood practitioners and primary
teachers who are motivated, competent decision
makers, and intellectual and ethical leaders
with positive dispositions towards children and
learning.

 Matriculation Certificate with at least one of the Advanced Level subjects (from a specified list) obtained
at grade C or better
 Passes in the SEC at grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics
 Passes in the Proficiency Test approved by the Board in Maltese and English
 MCAST Higher National Diploma in Advanced Studies in Early Years or equivalent*
 Passes in the SEC at grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics
 Passes in the Proficiency Test approved by the Board in Maltese and English

 Possess any qualification/experience that demonstrates that you have reached the academic standard
requried to follow the course with profit
 Undergo an interview
 Passes in the Proficiency Test approved by the Board in Maltese and English
MCAST National Diploma in Early Years or equivalent
Pass in the SEC at grade 5 or better in Mathematics
Advanced Matriculation Pass at Grade C or better in a subject from a specified list
Passes in the Proficiency Test approved by the Board in Maltese and English
All applicants must produce a good Police Good Conduct Certificate together with a proof that they are not included on the Register established under the
Protection of Minors (Regulation) Act.
* with these qualifications the Board may exempt you from following any year of the course.
