LAUREL JONES SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT "The Cabrillo College Men's Basketball Team begins the 2013-2014 season seeking another championship in the Coast Conference South. Coach Tony Marcopulos has led the Seahawks to winning records in each of the last nine years and through his coaching and teamwork the Seahawks continue to soar. I am very proud of our student athletes, many of whom will go on to study and play basketball at four-year colleges and universities. Go Seahawks!" DALE MURRAY Director of Athletics “Welcome to Cabrillo College Men’s Basketball. The 2013-2014 schedule brings together some of the best basketball teams and players in Northern California. All of the athletes have combined academic and athletic talent to bring you a level of competition that exemplifies quality achievement under expert leadership. Enjoy the intensity of the competition and keep in mind that Cabrillo College encourages both the participants and spectators to conduct themselves in the true spirit of sportsmanship.” 4 2013-2014 Season Preview: 13-14 Outlook/Preview This years team will be very fun to watch. We will have a nice blend of quickness, size and skill. We will be young and inexperienced so my guess is it might take us some time to figure some things out. Overall, I am really looking forward to coaching this team and finding out how good we can become. They will need to understand that at this point in our programs history we have built ourselves a reputation that comes with expectation. Those expectations have pressure attached to them and that pressure is to win. Our opponents expect us to be competitive and therefore tend to bring their best effort to us which requires us to be at our best. Our players don't understand this yet but very shortly they will get an education in competing at this level. Warren Jackson is back after season ending knee injury and while Jackson is a returner he had limited time on the court as his injury came after only the sixth game of the year. Jackson is a 6'1" 190 guard out of Detriot, MI. He will be a key component for the us. Cody Love returns (6'1" 170) from Santa Cruz and played a lot minutes last year. Cody will provide much needed leadership for this team. Jake Harrell also returns for his sophomore year. The 6'4" 215lb forward was a valuable part of the 12-13 championship team. Harrell, from Aptos, CA, ranked in the top ten in the state last year in FG%. He has improved quite a bit from last year and should play a big role up front. Giovonni Gordon is also back from last years squad. Gordon, 6'5" 210lb, wing from Detriot, MI had an injury filled year. Hopefully he can stay healthy and give us some added depth. There are plenty of new faces so lets start with the posts. Daeshawn Patterson is a 6'7" 250lb post player from Reno, NV. He has a chance to be outstanding but has long way to go before that happens. Melvin Lee from Baton Rouge, LA is a 6'8" 220lb freshman with real good skill but needs to get stronger and learn to play at this level. If he does quickly that will really help us. He has a chance to be good as well. Zavon Jackson, 6'5" 215lb, freshman from Salt Lake City, UT is a player to watch. He also is a skilled big with a chance to be good. Laron Counce, 6'5" 220lb, from Gary, IN is a transfer from Kennedy King Community College in Chicago, IL. Counce is a strong athlete that should be able to rebound the ball. Pontus Nodlof from Sweden, 6'7" 210lbs, is added depth at the post spot and has really improved since school started. David Abittan tranferrred to us from Menlo College (Atherton, CA). Abittan is a 6' 160lb sophomore from Reno, NV. He can shoot the ball really well and understands how to play. He has played well throughout our preseason practices. Levie Wright from Baton Rouge, LA is a 6'1" 200lb athlete that has a lot of skill. He will help us that is for sure. Allen Wilcher from Gary, IN will be a welcome addition to our roster. Wilcher will bring a much needed toughness to our team. In addition, we have Latrell Wilson from Arcata, CA. Wilson is a 6'4" 185lb wing with a lot of ability. He has a chance to be really good in the future. As he matures and gets stronger he will have a very bright future. Jordan Dansereau from Reno, NV will add some much needed depth to the group. This team has the make-up to be very good in time. However, we have much work to do and I'm not sure when we will get to the point that we can play the way I want us to. The good news is that it will not be a matter of if we can or can't. It will be a function of our willingness to. I'd like to think they are willing, but only time will tell. Nonetheless, it will be fun to watch them grow. I just hope I don't go completely grey between now and then. MORE GOOD INFO... Would you like to get scores & highlights via email? His years of experience, first as a player and then as a NCAA Division 1 assistant coach had prepared him for the task ahead: Taking over a program that had been losing for the last two decades and turning it into a winner. Fourteen years later, the Cabrillo Basketball Program is thriving under Marcopulos’ direction. His teams are successful both on the court and in the classroom. Plus, many former Seahawks have continued their education and playing careers at 4-year schools. Coach Marcopulos knows the important role community colleges play in the development of young student-athletes. He also knows very well what Div. I programs across the country are looking for in a student-athlete. His experience, knowledge, passion and work ethic have made him an excellent addition to the Cabrillo College Athletic Department and an invaluable asset to the men that he coaches. AT CABRILLO 2012-2013 was another history making year. For the second time in school history the Cabrillo College Men’s Basketball program hosted the first round of the Northern California playoffs, and they where victorious. Since Marcopulos’ arrival in 2000 the Seahawks have made the steady climb from what was one of the worst California Community College basketball programs in the state. For eleven consecutive seasons the Seahawks have won 14 or more games. For ten consecutive seasons the Seahawks have been .500 or better. The Seahawks have been to the playoffs in eleven of the last thirteen years. Three of those eight appearances have been to the Regional Finals. Since 2004 Marcopulos coached teams have finished no lower than third place in the Coast Conference South Division. During the past seven years, the Seahawks have finished no lower than second with five Conference Championships and a combined record of 69-15. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE Marcopulos was a Division I Assistant Coach for 12 seasons (1988-2000). He began his 6 (Stockton, CA), where he worked alongside coaching career at the University of the Pacific T ONY M ARCOPULOS Head Coach Bob Thomason for 11 seasons. Then, he joined the men's basketball staff at the University of Portland for the 1999-2000 season. Coach Marcopulos has first-hand experience in building a basketball program. When he joined Thomason in Stockton, UOP had enjoyed only one winning season during the previous nine years. That quickly changed. During the next eleven years Pacific had eight winning seasons. Those 11 seasons included many highlights; two separate 16 game winning streaks (1997-1998), the 1997 Big West conference championship, the 1998 Big West Western Division championship, the school's first NCAA tournament appearance in almost 20 years (1997), the school's first ever NIT Tournament appearance (1998), and the second longest home court winning streak in the country behind Kansas at 32 in a row (1998). Pacific also boasted a 90% graduation rate over that same time period. After the 1998-1999 season Marcopulos left Pacific for a similar position at the University of Portland. Marcopulos joined Head Coach Rob Chavez’s staff in August of 1999. The Pilots (a member of the WCC (West Coast Conference)) went 12-16 on the year. After nine months in Portland, Marcopulos was hired as the new Head Coach at Cabrillo College in April of 2000. PLAYING CAREER Marcopulos is a native of the Bay Area and attended Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. As a point guard, he led the Dons to four league championships and a four-year record of 89-10. Upon graduating high school in 1982, Marcopulos went on to Columbia Junior College in Columbia, California (82-84) where he played for Bob Thomason and recorded seasons of 17-14 and 27-7. He then accepted a basketball scholarship to attend Carroll College in Helena, Montana (84-85) before following Coach Thomason to California State University, Stanislaus (Turlock, CA) (85-87) where he helped lead the team to a conference title and a Division III NCAA tournament berth in 1987. EDUCATION Marcopulos received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Stanislaus State University. He later earned a Masters of Arts degree in Teaching (Physical Education) and a secondary school teaching credential (For Physical Education) from the University of the Pacific. Tony lives in Aptos and has two daughters Emma (7) and Sophia (5). 7 T ONY M ARCOPULOS –COACHING HISTORY 1987-88 James Logan HS Head Coach (Freshman) 1988-89 University of the Pacific 1989-90 University of the Pacific 1990-91 University of the Pacific 1991-92 University of the Pacific 1992-93 University of the Pacific 1993-94 University of the Pacific 1994-95 University of the Pacific 1995-96 University of the Pacific 1996-97 University of the Pacific 1997-98 University of the Pacific Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach 20-8 7-21 15-14 14-15 14-16 16-11 17-14 14-13 15-12 24-6 23-10 Pacific’s 1st winning season since ’85-86 Highest league finish since ’79-80 (3rd) Big West Tournament Runner’s –Up Bob Thomason BWC Coach of the Year Back-to-back winning seasons 3rd straight upper division BWC finish Highest BWC finish (2nd place) since 1979 1st NCAA tournament appearance since 1979 1st NIT appearance/2nd straight BWC WD title Michael Olowokandi 1st player selected in NBA Draft (LA Clippers) 14-13 Thomason becomes Pacific all-time wins leader 12-14 1998-99 University of the Pacific Assistant Coach 1999-00 University of Portland Assistant Coach Overall record as a Collegiate assistant Coach: 176-145 ————————————————————————————————————————————————— 2000-01 Cabrillo College Head Coach 8-22 8 wins totaled more than the previous 3 yrs. combined. 1st playoff appearance in over a decade. 2001-02 Cabrillo College Head Coach 9-23 Back-to-back play-off appearance in over 2 decades. In the thirteen years, he has made significant progress in building a foundation for both present and future success. Prior to beginning his 14th season, he discussed his thoughts regarding Cabrillo College, his team, his program and just what can be expected: WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE SOME OF THE STRENGTHS OF THIS COLLEGE? MARCOPULOS: The location of the campus and it’s close proximity to the beach obviously stand out as tremendous assets to this college. Cabrillo, as an institution of higher education, is one of the truly outstanding community colleges in the state of California. We have instructors here that are committed to the growth and development of students. Lastly, Cabrillo is the kind of place where a student-athlete can get an outstanding two-year education at an affordable cost, play intercollegiate athletics and enjoy college social life in one of the most beautiful areas of the country. WHAT WILL YOU PROMISE A STUDENT-ATHLETE IF HE COMES TO CABRILLO? MARCOPULOS: What first comes to mind is what I will NOT promise. I will not ever promise a recruit playing time....ever. They are promised zero minutes. They will earn whatever amount of playing time they get. However, there are some things that I’m willing to make promises about. First, I promise that they will go to class each and everyday. Although I can’t guarantee that each player will graduate, I will say that only one player who completed all four semesters with us failed to graduate. In my twenty five years of collegiate coaching I have only coached four student-athletes who did not graduate who finished their eligibility. I promise they will attend and be in an atmosphere that will be conducive to attaining a degree. Second, I promise they will be a much better player when they leave Cabrillo than when they came. They will work harder on their game and be in better shape than they have ever been in their life. They will be coached everyday. Lastly, I promise they will be better people when they leave us than when they came. Not because they are hanging around me everyday, although I do intend to have a very positive impact on their life, but because I will surround them with teammates that are good people. It stands to reason that if you are surrounded with good people, people of character, then that will impact you in a positive way. Clearly, the opposite is true as well. Our teams are recruited based in large part on an individual’s character. Go to class, get better, be a better person. Other than that, I don’t make promises. WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST STRENGTHS OF THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM? MARCOPULOS: Our commitment to the development of our players is easily our biggest strength. Student-athletes in this program will be challenged to excel in the classroom as well as on the basketball court. We make every effort to ensure that our players receive the best college basketball experience possible. WHERE DOES CABRILLO RATE AMONG COAST CONFERENCE CONTENDERS? MARCOPULOS: Our conference has traditionally been extremely competitive. The Coast Conference South is perennially advancing several teams deep into the post conference tournament championship. We will contend for the conference championship. Winning it and advancing to the State Championship is our only goal. 14 Former Seahawks… Where Are They Now?
