Limited Submissions
Limited submission programs have
sponsor restrictions on the number of
proposals that may be submitted by a
single institution and will require institutional screening to determine which
applications will be submitted. Dr. Jim
Guikema, Associate Vice President for
Research, is the internal coordinator for
limited submission programs. Please
notify him at 785-532-6195, email:
guikema@ksu.edu, by the Internal due
date listed in the Funding Bulletin (FB
15-8) or by at least two months prior to
the sponsor deadline if you wish to submit to a limited submission program.

15-2 Collaborative Activity Awards
(McDonnell)
The Foundation offers Collaborative
Activity Awards to initiate interdisciplinary discussions on problems or issues, to
help launch interdisciplinary research
networks, or to fund communities of
researchers/practitioners dedicated to
developing new methods, tools, and
applications of basic research to applied
problems. In each case the focus of the
collaborative activity must meet the program guidelines for one of the following
program areas: a) Studying Complex Systems; b) Understanding Human Cognition; and c) Mathematical & Complex
Systems Approaches for Brain Cancer.
The 21st Century Collaborative Activity
Awards are awards for multidisciplinary

GENERAL
15-1 FAA Aviation Research and
Development Grants (DOT)
The FAA is soliciting proposals for
research grants and cooperative agreements to pursue the long-term growth and
short-term technical needs of civil aviation. The FAA Research Grants Program
encourages and supports innovative,
advanced research of potential benefit to
the long-term growth of civil aviation and
Commercial Space Transportation. The
pursuit of basic and applied research in
scientific and engineering disciplines that
have the potential to further knowledge
and understanding on a broad front of
emerging technologies is crucial to the
realization of this goal. The Research
Grants Program does not require the
immediate application to Research, Engineering, and Development (R,E&D) programs, although this may occur in some
cases. The agency encourages the submission of proposals that embrace the entire
spectrum of physical, chemical, biological,
medical, psychological, mathematical, and
15-3 Bioengineering Research
Partnerships (BRP) RO1 (NIH)
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages bioengineering
applications that will accelerate the
development and adoption of promising
tools and technologies that can address
important biomedical research problems.
The objectives are to establish these tools
and technologies as robust, well-characterized solutions that fulfill an unmet
need and are capable of enhancing our
understanding of life science processes or
the practice of medicine. Awards will
focus on supporting multidisciplinary
teams that apply an integrative, quantitative bioengineering approach to developing these technologies and engage
biomedical researchers or clinicians
throughout the project. PAR-14-092

EDUCATION
15-4 Education Research (IES)
The Director of the Institute of Education
Sciences (Institute) announces the Institute’s FY 2015 competitions for grants to
support education research and special education research. The Institute’s purpose in
awarding these grants is to provide national
leadership in expanding fundamental
knowledge and understanding 1) of developmental and school readiness outcomes
for infants and toddlers with or at risk for
disability, and 2) of education outcomes for
all students from early childhood education
through postsecondary and adult education.
The Institute’s National Center for Education Research (NCER) will hold five competitions: One competition for education
research, one competition for education
research training, one competition for education research and development centers,
one competition for statistical and research
methodology in education, and one competition for partnerships and collaborations
focused on problems of practice or policy.
The Institute’s National Center for Special
Education Research (NCSER) will hold two
competitions: one competition for special
education research and one competition for
special education research training. EDGRANTS-041014-001-7 (GG 4/10/14)

15-5 EarthScope (NSF)
EarthScope is an Earth science program to
explore the 4-dimensional structure of the
North American continent. The EarthScope
Program provides a framework for broad,
integrated studies across the Earth sciences,
including research on fault properties and
the earthquake process, strain transfer, magmatic and hydrous fluids in the crust and
mantle, plate boundary processes, largescale continental deformation, continental
structure and evolution, and composition
and structure of the deep Earth. In addition,
EarthScope offers a centralized forum for
Earth science education at all levels and an
excellent opportunity to develop cyberinfrastructure to integrate, distribute, and analyze diverse data sets. The EarthScope
Facility, consisting of the Plate Boundary
Observatory (PBO), the San Andreas Fault
Observatory at Depth (SAFOD), and the
USArray, is a multi-purpose array of instruments and observatories that greatly
expands the observational capabilities of
the Earth sciences and permits us to
advance our understanding of the structure,
evolution and dynamics of the North American continent. This Solicitation calls for
single or collaborative proposals to conduct
scientific research and/or education and

Research Program (OCRP) to support
innovative, high-impact ovarian cancer
research. The Investigator-Initiated
Research Award (must be an independent
investigator at or above the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent): supports
meritorious basic and clinically oriented
research in ovarian cancer; impact is an
important review criterion; preliminary
data are required. Pilot Award (investigators at or above the postdoctoral level or
equivalent): supports conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research
that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will
drive the field of ovarian cancer research
forward; innovation and impact are
important review criteria; preliminary
data are not required, but allowed; clinical
trials are not allowed.

Research Institute’s (NSBRI) First Award
Program is currently open. The two-year
fellowships are available in any U.S. laboratory carrying out space-related biomedical or biotechnological research.
Applicants are required to submit proposals with the support of a mentor and an
institution, and all proposals will be evaluated by a peer-review panel. Selected
applicants receive a stipend, allowance
for health insurance, and travel funds for
related scientific meetings. Also, an
optional, competitive third year of fellowship support is available. This year’s
applicants can also request to be considered to spend part of the fellowship in
Russia, via a program involving NSBRI
and the Institute of Biomedical Problems
of the Russian Academy of Sciences in
