Sloan Foundation, although those who receive the grants are among the youngest researchers the Foundation assists. The Sloan Research Fellowships were established to provide support and recognition to scientists, often in their first appointments to university faculties, who were endeavoring to set up laboratories and establish their independent research projects with little or no outside support. Candidates must hold a tenure track (or equivalent) position at a college, university, or other degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada. Tenure track faculty positions at the candidate’s institution must include a yearly teaching requirement. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, 18-2 NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) (NSF) This program makes grants to institutions of higher education to support scholarships for academically talented students demonstrating financial need, enabling them to enter the STEM workforce or STEM graduate school following completion of an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate-level degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics disciplines. Grantee institutions are responsible for selecting scholarship recipients, reporting demographic information about student scholars, and managing the S-STEM project at the institution. The program does not make scholarship awards directly to students. An Institution may submit one proposal from each constituent school or college that awards degrees in an eligible field. EPA is seeking to support research that will systematically inform policy makers at state and local levels regarding the deployment of innovative approaches to enable implementation of air pollution control strategies. This research aims to achieve the greatest public health benefits possible by reducing exposure to harmful air pollution. This program features four main research topics: Enhancing understanding of spatial and temporal differences in individual pollutants and pollutant mixtures within and across different areas (including urban areas, or between urban, suburban, and rural areas) or geographic regions; identifying and improving the characterization of the most important factors contributing to regional or city-tocity differences or similarities in air pollution and health impacts beyond topography and meteorology; improving the ability to understand and project how these contributing factors and differences may change over the next one to several decades; and advancing scientific knowledge and tools needed to develop robust strategies for air pollution control to improve public and environmental health under a variety of conditions, including consideration of approaches for addressing climate change preparedness. The goals of FMPP grants are to increase domestic consumption of and access to locally and regionally produced agricultural products, and to develop new market opportunities for farm and ranch operations serving local markets by developing, improving, expanding, and providing outreach, training, and technical assistance to, or assisting in the development, improvement, and expansion of domestic farmers’ markets, roadside stands, community-supported agriculture programs, agritourism activities, and other direct producer-to-consumer market opportunities. An applicant is limited to no more than one grant in a grant-funding year. Projects funded through this program will work to solve water resource problems by advancing and disseminating the knowledge base available to agricultural, rural, and urbanizing communities. Programs in the following areas are eligible: history; archaeology; literature; languages, both classical and modern; philosophy; ethics; comparative religion; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; and those aspects of the social sciences which share the content and the methods of humanistic disciplines. The Foundations welcomes projects that cross the boundaries between humanistic disciplines and explore the connections between the humanities and other areas of scholarship. Further, the program works to sustain a longterm commitment to basic research in this field and coordinates research efforts across the federal government. The ARI program seeks novel cross-cutting research that will enhance the nation’s ability to detect and interdict nuclear or radiological material outside of regulatory control, and otherwise help prevent nuclear or radiological attacks. This year’s Solicitation topics will emphasize original early-stage research which demonstrates quantifiable improvements over existing methods. The R21 grant mechanism is intended to encourage exploratory and developmental research projects by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. A range of approaches are being encouraged by this FOA, from basic mechanistic studies using in vitro and in vivo model systems to studies that add new data collection activities and/or make use of extant data or biospecimens in existing human studies. There is a companion RFP for the R01 grant mechanism.
