GENERAL
23-1 Fellowships to Assist Research
and Artistic Creation (Guggenheim)
The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial
Foundation provides fellowships for
advanced professionals in all fields—
including the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and creative arts—
except the performing arts. Often characterized as midcareer awards, the fellowships are intended for individuals who
have already demonstrated exceptional
capacity for productive scholarship or
exceptional creative ability in the arts. The
program seeks to further the development
of scholars and artists by helping them
engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under
the freest possible conditions. (PND 5/2/

Interface (BWF)
BWF’s Career Awards at the Scientific
Interface (CASI) provide $500,000 over
five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of
faculty service. These awards are
intended to foster the early career development of researchers who have transitioned or are transitioning from
undergraduate and/or graduate work in
the physical/mathematical/computational sciences or engineering into postdoctoral work in the biological sciences,
and who are dedicated to pursuing a
career in academic research. Scientific
advances such as genomics, quantitative
structural biology, imaging techniques,
and modeling of complex systems have
created opportunities for exciting
research careers at the interface between
the physical/computational sciences and
the biological sciences. Recognizing the
vital role such cross-trained scientists
will play in furthering biomedical science, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund has
developed the Career Awards at the Scientific Interface.

23-6 Dear Colleague Letter:
Cybersecurity Education EAGERs Pushing the Dimensions of the Domain
(NSF)
The National Science Foundation (NSF)
is announcing its intention to fund a small
number of Early Concept Grants for
Exploratory Research (EAGERs) to
encourage advances in cybersecurity education, an area supported by the Foundation’s Secure and Trustworthy
Cyberspace (SaTC). EAGER is a mechanism for supporting exploratory work in
its early stages on untested, but potentially transformative, research ideas or
approaches. This work may be considered
especially “high risk - high payoff” in the
sense that it, for example, involves radically different approaches, applies new
expertise, or engages novel disciplinary
or interdisciplinary perspectives. In particular, with this Dear Colleague Letter
(DCL), we wish to alert you that we are
interested in using the EAGER mechanism to encourage new collaborations
between the cybersecurity research and
computing education research communities. The proposed research should fit the
Cybersecurity Education (EDU) perspective within the SaTC solicitation. NSF 14075

23-7 Partnerships for Innovation:
Accelerating Innovation ResearchTechnology Translation (PFI: AIR-TT)
(NSF)
The NSF Partnerships for Innovation
(PFI) program within the Division of
Industrial Innovation and Partnerships
(IIP) is an umbrella for two complementary subprograms, Accelerating Innovation Research (AIR) and Building
Innovation Capacity (BIC). Overall, the
PFI program offers opportunities to connect new knowledge to societal benefit
through translational research efforts and/
or partnerships that encourage, enhance
and accelerate innovation and entrepreneurship. The subject of this solicitation
is PFI: AIR-Technology Translation (PFI:
AIR-TT). The PFI: AIR-TT solicitation
serves as an early opportunity to move
previously NSF-funded research results
with promising commercial potential
along the path toward commercialization.

state. While the majority of the Foundation’s funding is through invited proposals, the Recognition Grants program is
designed to fund unsolicited requests. It is
targeted for organizations and agencies
proposing meaningful and charitable
projects that fit within the Foundation’s
mission of improving the health of all
Kansans. In addition to supporting
projects, the Foundation also seeks to
support initiatives that focus on promoting policy, systems and environmental

23-9 Superfund Hazardous Substance
Research and Training Program (P42)
(NIH) (HHS)
The National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences (NIEHS) is announcing
the continuation of the Superfund Hazardous Substance Research and Training Program, referred to as Superfund Research
Program (SRP) Centers. SRP Center
grants will support problem-based, solution-oriented research Centers that consist
of multiple, integrated projects representing both the biomedical and environmental science and engineering disciplines; as
well as cores tasked with administrative,
community engagement, research translation, training, and research support func-
The goal of the program is to provide
opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study
what happens at the points where human
and microbial systems connect. The program supports research that sheds light on
the fundamentals that affect the outcomes
of this encounter: how colonization,
infection, commensalism and other relationships play out at levels ranging from
molecular interactions to systemic ones.
Studies supported by the program may
have their roots in pathogen or host biology but the focus of the work should be
on the interplay of host and microbe.
Research on under-studied infectious diseases, including pathogenic fungi, protozoan and metazoan diseases, and
emerging infections is especially of interest. In addition, excellent animal models
of human disease, including work done in
veterinary research settings, are within
the program’s scope. A U.S. or Canadian
institution— including its medical school,
graduate schools, and all affiliated hospitals and research institutes—may nominate up to two candidates. To encourage
applications from veterinarians, institutions that nominate a researcher who
holds the D.V.M. will be allowed three
nominations.
