Student Success: The Instructors’ Toolkit identified several ideas for possible action on improving
student success. Some of them are: creating student cohorts (or learning communities) within
disciplines, using an Early Alert system to inform individual students who are falling behind in your
course , using classroom time for “advising” students, offering more interdisciplinary approaches in
the course offerings, and working more closely with K-12 feeder schools. In the area of staff
development, the Toolkit mentions: faculty peer mentoring, peer observation, sharing teaching
ideas, improving evaluation structures, and funding for training/conferences.
Now, please take a minute to review the 2013 Scorecard on the other side of this page.

Some explanations:
Persistence - Percentage of degree and/or transfer-seeking students tracked for six years through 201112 who enrolled in three consecutive terms. This metric is considered a milestone or momentum point.
Research shows that students with sustained enrollment are more likely to succeed.
30 Units - Percentage of degree and/or transfer-seeking students tracked for six years through 2011-12
who achieved at least 30 units. Credit accumulation, 30 units specifically, tend to be positively
correlated with completion and wage gain.
Completion - Percentage of degree and/or transfer-seeking students tracked for six years through 201112 who completed a degree, certificate, or transfer related outcomes.
Remedial – Percentage of credit students tracked for six years through 2011-12 who started below
transfer level in English, mathematics, and/or ESL and completed a college-level course in the same
discipline.
CTE – Percentage of students tracked for six years through 2011-12 who completed several courses
classified as career technical education (or vocational) in a single discipline and completed a degree,
certificate, or transferred.
