CAREERS SUPPORT FOR NEW UNDERGRADUATE
LAWS STUDENTS
Welcome to the Faculty of Laws, the Faculty continues to enjoy an excellent reputation amongst law firms,
barristers’ chambers and other companies generally. This leaflet contains a summary of the advice and events
available to students to help you to develop and achieve your work ambitions.

We offer the following to all LLB students:

20-minute guidance sessions - where you can discuss any career related issues such as:

decisions about what to do after leaving UCL Laws

CV and application checking

planning your next steps to get to where you want to be

how to get work experience and internships

marketing your degree and experience to employers

gaining skills
Sessions take place with Stephen Gurman the Laws Careers Consultant, a specialist member of UCL
Careers, in the Faculty of Laws, Bidborough House, 38-50 Bidborough Street, WC1H 9BT.
Sign-up through the Laws Careers Moodle page.
Bookings can be made online up to 7 days in advance using your My UCL Careers account
www.ucl.ac.uk/careers/myuclcareers. Once logged in, use the 'I want to... / Make Appointment' option and
select 'UCL Departmental Appointments' from the list of options to check appointment availability.

Practice Interviews – for when you have a real interview coming up.
This will help you practice typical interview questions for the role you've applied for (including vacation
schemes, training contracts, pupillages and roles outside of legal careers) and help you to work on your
interview technique.

Monday Careers Evenings
Throughout the Autumn and Spring terms, each week there is a careers evening in the Faculty. A wide
range of top employers will be leading sessions, organised by the student Law Society, to inform you
about different areas of work, help you develop the skills you’ll need for when you graduate and advise
you on how to convey your full potential to employers in applications and interviews. See the Law

Networking Opportunities
Whether at careers evenings or at other events such as the Spring term annual Barrister’s Cocktail
Party, you’ll have the opportunity to speak to a wide range of leading professionals and former UCL
students.
Law Fair
Held on the 16th and 17th November in the Wilkins building cloisters. This 2 day event, kindly
sponsored by Norton Rose Fulbright and the University of Law features over 60 exhibitors including
leading law firms and course providers. Different exhibitors will be attending each day.
Careers Newsletter
Check your email each Friday for a weekly summary of opportunities and events tailored to students in
the Faculty of Laws.

Laws Employability Award
Once term starts, you can register on the “Laws Undergraduate Employability Award” Moodle Page.
This award is designed to assist UCL Laws students in gaining skills and experiences which will be
useful in successfully tackling the graduate recruitment market.
To put it simply, it's designed to help students to get jobs.
To qualify for the award you must attend a certain number of events and workshops, gain some work
experience and complete a reflective exercise. Full details can be found on the Moodle page.
By completing the award, you will have explored and developed:








Communication and presentation skills
Reflection and action planning

In addition to all of the activities available in the Faculty, students also benefit from the events being held at UCL

Employer led CV checking and practice interviews
CV checking and practice interviews with top graduate recruiters including law firms.
Sector Themed Weeks
A number of week-long events enabling you to hear from professionals working in a wide range of areas, from
arts to science. Includes “Focus on Law” week in the Autumn term.
Skills4Work
Learn more about the skills that recruiters look for in potential employees, by coming along to an employer-led
Q&A session, skill development workshop or mock assessment centre, or have a 1-1 session to develop application or interview techniques.
International Students Programme
Workshops on marketing yourself globally (e.g. CV Workshop, De-mystifying the UK Job Market, Interviews and
Assessment Centres, Marketing Yourself in your home country)
International forums and networking events (e.g. International Students Forum, Target China)
Visa information with Rights and Advice (e.g. Guide to Tier 2 Visa, Visa Options Post Graduation).
Alumni Mentoring
Students can search for and contact an alumni mentor for informal careers guidance by logging into the UCL
Alumni Web Community.
