Cabrillo Extension: Art Making as Choreography
Purchin. A
Welcome to Art Making as Choreography: A Mixed Media Process Painting Workshop. I’m looking forward to
seeing what happens as we move, paint and draw and explore new territory together. I hope this experience
will invigorate your creative process and leave you with new pathways to create really alive art.
Please wear comfortable clothes for moving and for painting and drawing in. In the first half of the day we
will alternate between group activities and personal work in your sketchbook.
Bring at least one high quality sketchbook for both wet and dry media that is 9” x 9” or larger. Large is good!
(It can be a rectangle or square format). I suggest Super Deluxe by Bee Paper Company - or Stillman and Birn
sketchbooks but any smooth paper that can take water media will work. A watercolor pad will also be fine.

In the second half of the day the emphasis will be on your personal work. I will encourage you to work in a
style that is fast, sensuous and impulsive so you may cover a lot of surface area.
I’m asking you to use quality paper so that you can paint and draw in many layers.
Please also bring the following media:
Quality paper eg. 2 pieces of Arches 140 # or 300# water color paper and/or 2 canvases. If you are working
on paper - bring a large board or clipboard so you can stand at the easel and work. The size
should be at least 12 x 12 and can be very large. Note: You can choose to work in multiples on smaller
surfaces. (Yes, I will encourage you to work on at least two pieces simultaneously!) You are also welcome to
bring some work that you may have already started to add to and to possibly paint over.
