TLC News
Aloha,
Matt
Old Business (status of “Action Items” from our last meeting):
 TLC did request that Canvas shells for SU16 and FA16 be created, and
Marcelo in IT is working on that (should be done soon)
 TLC did schedule Canvas help drop-in times (Monday-Thursday, 10-12 and
2:30-4:30)
 TLC decided to ramp up Canvas training, and plans to start sending targeted
emails to instructors who are still using Blackboard
 TLC emailed Marketing to request that Canvas info be added to the Cabrillo
homepage (to spread the word to students)
 Aloha has been researching and voting on Canvas Feature Ideas, which is
fun and easy to do. The idea to add a subject line to discussion posts is
open for voting right now!

TLC will email faculty when
Summer and Fall shells are
ready
TLC will email Summer
faculty to make sure they are
ready to use Canvas and
have migrated from BB
TLC will check-in with
Marketing
Matt will implement the
suggested changes to the
Canvas Guides web page
Minutes from March 7 meeting were reviewed and approved, with one typo
noted
New Business:
 Cabrillo College Canvas users now have their own dedicated line for getting
immediate help from Canvas support via phone: 1-877-982-1780
 Canvas plans to roll out a new “modern quizzing engine” this summer, so
expect changes and improvements to the quiz tool in Canvas
 Matt continues to update the TLC website, most notably the Canvas Guides
page. Let your students know about the student guide!
o Committee members provided feedback on the Canvas Guides
page, such as changing the buttons and removing tables, to improve
accessibility and design
 Matt reported that the # of student DE help requests coming into the Help
Desk were way down since migrating to Canvas

Francine presented a list of relevant news and updates as well as an OEI
Overview handout.
Notes on Francine’s handouts:
o “RTR”: New “refer to tutor report” tool that allows instructors to refer
their students for online tutoring through NetTutor, and also listen to
their recorded session
o The online tutors are high-quality – for example, they use the
Socratic method and ask probing questions
o NetTutor is free and available for all students in Canvas
o OEI is very likely to continue to pay for this for at least another 5
years. Worst case scenario is that they pay for 2/3 of the cost.
o Online counseling tool – Cranium Café – which allows for web
conferencing with tutors. 5 Cabrillo counselors have been trained.
Rachel discussed a Business course sequence being considered for
Watsonville in the Fall. Meeting this summer to discuss “Pathways” pilot
AUO for DE needs to be assessed; Should be discussed at next DE meeting

Rachel will send an email to
the committee about the
AUO, and we will discuss at
our May meeting
Ideas for FLEX proposals:
o NetTutor presentation
o Francine: Active learning/hybridized classroom; update on Portal
o Deirdre: Canvas for on-campus classes (grades, syllabus, etc.)
o Rachel: Data dashboard with SOFIA
o Canvas Q&A (can a Canvas trainer do another webinar?)
o Aloha: Accessibility tips
Online Teaching Conference: San Diego, June 16-17. Rachel reported that
funds were available for 5-6 faculty to attend. She will send details and
criteria for applying for the funds.
Should some of Cabrillo’s online courses be reviewed using the OEI Rubric?
Perhaps they would submit directly to @ONE, or go through the TLC first,
who could then triage to @ONE. Should we ask for volunteers who want
their course reviewed?
Evaluation of online courses: The process can be difficult
o How to improve student response rate for the instructor eval survey?
o Whose job is it to promote the survey? Evaluator? Division office?
o Add to DE site something about what to do if survey response is
low, OR could this be folded into the evaluation process?
o How can an evaluator best complete the evaluation? Sit with the
evaluatee? Sit with someone at the TLC?
o Is there an “evaluator” role in Canvas (something in between a
student and a teacher role)
@ONE trainings: Can these go towards salary advancement? Would they
be done as “alternative credit”? Hard info is needed on this process

FLEX proposals will be
submitted by Apr. 18
Rachel will email information
about OTC funds
Aloha will investigate
possibility of conducting
informal course reviews
TLC will clarify process for
online course evaluation and
surveys, and will update the
DE Committee website
TLC will get better
clarification on the process
for using @ONE trainings for
salary advancement
