Volume 14, no 4 AirWaves May 2012 PILOTS Awards Spotlight Emerging Leaders ($500 Each) These awards are sponsored by Blue Key Honorary to recognize PILOTS students who have demonstrated the potential to lead others and maintain their academic standing. The recipients of this award demonstrate strong leadership traits within a diverse society while maintaining a respectable grade point average. This year’s winners are: Marcus Herring, Randale Lambert, Carlos Morales and Alexandria Ware Freshman Excellence ($300 Each) These awards are given to students in the PILOTS Program for meritorious achievement. Students may be awarded for any of the following: grade point average, strong work ethic, social responsibility, and/or demonstrated leadership skills. This year’s recipients are: Seth Bovee, Landon Breckenridge, Mary Estes, Briana Gomez, Cassie Kerr, Alicia Luarks, Alexandria Moran, Madison Sha, Madeline Weathers and Marin Willis PILOTS Choice ($250 each ) This award goes to students in the PILOTS Program based upon the quality of his/her efforts towards academic achievement and willingness to work cooperatively as part of a team. The recipient of this award is a well-rounded individual with a strong work ethic, a sense of social responsibility, and is goal-oriented. This year’s winners are: Kendra Hornbacker and Jasmine Davis Fall 2010 Student of the Semester ($250) This award goes to the student chosen by PILOTS staff and instructors for academic excellence in the Fall semester. This Fall’s recipient is Katie Watkins. Spring 2011 Student of the Semester ($250) The student most exemplifying academic excellence in the Spring semester was Sheridan Miles. Class Awards ($100 Each) These awards were given to the students who stood out to their professors as the most engaged, demonstrating the best academic effort in the class. This year’s recipients are: Speech: Vanessa Ellis Math: Dayton Crist Psychology: Michael Mains Sociology: Shelby Miles Geography: Jarred Mayberry Essay: Cassie Kerr Study Tips for Finals Week Study every day. Make it more fun by alternating subjects. If you need motivation, set small rewards for yourself– a walk around the block or a quick dance break. Eat Healthy. Be careful not to add in lots of sugar or salty snacks. They’ll just make you tired. Get some sleep. Being tired makes you forgetful. You’ve worked hard all semester– you can do it! OTHER RESOURCES Student Organizations There is a full listing of student organizations on campus at http:// www.k-state.edu/ directories/orgs.html. You will find a multitude of student groups based on majors, interests, and ethnicity. Where Do I Go for Tutoring After PILOTS? 201 Leasure Hall You can sign up for a tutor by picking up a tutor request form in Holton Hall 101; Leasure Hall also offers walk-in help for Math and English. ARC and DARC Like the PILOTS study lab, they offer tutoring, computers, and study space. ARC is located in Kramer Dining Center and DARC is located in Derby Dining Center. Counseling Center The Counseling Center offers individual or group therapy for students, but they don’t just offer counseling services! They also operate the University Life Café and offer two online programs, the Academic Anxiety Online Program and the Stress Management Online Program. For more resources outside of the PILOTS Program, go to: http://www.ksu.edu/ pilots/usefullinks English Department Writing Center Located in the English/Counseling Services Building, Room 122D, they provide walk-in tutoring or you can also enroll in a two-credit hour course that provides structured tutoring for your writing classes. Education Support Services First-generation and/or low-income students are encouraged to stop by Holton 201 for tutoring and academic skills classes. Department Tutoring Check your department’s website or your academic advisor may also be able to direct you to a tutor in your program of study. Not all departments offer free tutoring; make sure you double check.
