We can do this - assembly resource Stage Early and first level (Primary 1-3). Rationale This assembly intends to: explore the strengths of individuals within the school community; examine working together; and celebrate the talents and skills that we can experience together. People involved Teacher and class Learning intentions At the end of this, the children will have experienced a sense of self-awareness, an awareness of others and a sense of values. At the end of the event, the children will identify their strengths and the strengths of others. Links with Curriculum for Excellence Introduction Confident individuals, responsible citizens Possible links with PSD, drama, art and design Ask if anyone can touch a finger to his or her nose (demonstrate). (Hopefully everyone will be able to!) Ask pupils to touch a finger to their noses, making the fingers fly through the air first (demonstrate describing a path through the air - not too big or children will not have enough room). Repeat the above, asking for a 'ping' sound on the end. Stimulus/stimuli Explain that now everyone is warmed up and ready to go, you're going to read an action poem and you want everyone to join in. They must listen carefully to find out what the actions are. (See Appendix.) Guided reflection Explain that it can be fun to do things together. Ask for examples, such as singing, sport and dancing. Sometimes we have to work hard to do things together well. Sometimes we must practise. If appropriate, repeat the poem, trying to 'get it together' better. Response Evaluation Meditation – see Appendix 1. Circle time – stating their own strengths and those of others 2. Evaluation by assembly leader 3. Observing pupil engagement in the event and follow-up discussion. Appendix Stimulus Here is my finger It can fly through the air And land on my nose Just right there - ping! Here is my finger It can wiggle about Sometimes it's in (finger drops down) And sometimes it's out. (finger points up) Here is my hand It's waving to you Sometimes there's one And sometimes two. (both hands wave) I can point at my face I can point to the floor I can point to the sky And here's something more If I point all around Everywhere I see (point to eyes) Many, many children (three quick points in different directions) Doing just the same as me! (point to self) Response Meditation: We are glad about times when we can enjoy doing things with other people. In a time of quiet, we think to ourselves of what we like to do best with other people. We are grateful for the fun we have together, for singing together, for playing together, for being together.
