CfE Implementation e-bulletin
June 2014
Welcome to the June edition of the CfE
Implementation e-bulletin.
It has been another busy but very productive
year for everyone involved in education.
A range of support has been made available
throughout the year from SQA, Education
Scotland and other national bodies. Alongside
the materials developed at local levels, I am
delighted that together we have built such a
strong, comprehensive and valuable national
package of materials.
Looking to the future, we will continue to build on the strong partnerships and
will keep you up to date with news of resources and events being planned to
enhance this package of support.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a lovely summer
and hope you enjoy a well-deserved break.
Dr Bill Maxwell
Chair of Implementation Group
Inspection Advice Note for 2014-15
Education Scotland has published the Inspection Advice Note for session 201415 which supports colleagues involved in pre-school, school and learning
community inspections from August 2014. It sets out an adjustment in
expectations, in line with national Curriculum for Excellence implementation
expectations, for HM Inspectors’ evaluation of Quality Indicator (QI) 5.1 (The
Curriculum) and QI 5.9 (Improvement through self-evaluation).
We recognise 2014-2015 as a year of consolidation when many of the priorities
identified in the Inspection Advice Note for 2013-2014 remain work in
progress. The advice note therefore contains only minimal change from the
2013-14 version. It takes account of: feedback from practitioners on the need
for a better balance of primary-related content, focusing on the key priority of
planning for progression in children’s learning; where secondary schools have
got to with the ‘Senior Phase’, building on the first year of new National
Qualifications and introducing new Highers; the Teaching Scotland’s Future
agenda; and the need to tackle bureaucracy and ensure assessment is
manageable.
The Advice Note will be supplemented by toolkits for evaluating the Broad
General Education in S1-S3 (June 2014), and at the primary stages (September
2014).
Exam results day
Exam results day is Tuesday 5 August 2014. Candidates can register with
MySQA and choose to have their results sent by email or text. To do this they
must sign up by Tuesday 8 July and activate their account by Wednesday 16
July. This is in addition to receiving their SQC by post and may be helpful if they
will be away from home when the results are due. For further information on
how to activate an account, please visit MySQA page on the SQA website.
Further titles in NPFS Nutshell series
The National Parent Forum of Scotland (NPFS) has been developing further
resources to accompany their successful Nutshell series. The latest resources,
Skills in a Nutshell, and Progression in a Nutshell, explain to parents and pupils
the routes, awards and qualifications available during the senior phase, and also
describe the skills that Curriculum for Excellence helps develop. Further
information is available on the NPFS website.
and finally, look out for....
Evaluating and Improving our Curriculum S1-S3
On 30 June 2014, Education Scotland will launch a new resource Evaluating
and Improving our Curriculum S1-S3, providing a clear and concise ‘toolkit’
to help secondary schools evaluate their curriculum.
It will draw together key aspects of advice related to Curriculum for Excellence
and self-evaluation available and will be published on the Education Scotland
website.
