FIRST LEVEL TECHNOLOGIES (SAL 2) Significant Aspect of Learning 2 Understanding how technological products work and how they affect people: 1. Critical thinking through exploration and discovery within a range of learning contexts. 2. Discussion and debate, skills and collaboration, leading and interaction with others. 3. Problem solving skills through exploration. Learning Statements & Experiences and Outcomes Learning Statement 1 Explore and use technologies, considering and discussing with others ways in which they help us. Learning Statement 2 Investigate and experiment with the features and functions of computer technology in learning and at home. Learning Statement 3 Develop an increasing range of problem solving skills when playing games and using programmable toys. TCH 1-01a By exploring and using technologies in the wider world, I can consider the ways in which they help. TCH 1-04a/b I explore and experiment with the features and functions of computer technology and I can use what I learn to support and enhance my learning in different contexts. TCH -1-09a I am developing problem solving strategies, navigation and co-ordination skills, as I play and learn with electronic games, remote control or programmable toys. Significant Aspect of Learning 2 (1st level) Understanding how technological products work and how they affect people: “It was so much fun learning about how different animations change how the PowerPoint looks. 1. I decided to have a green background so people could see the writing.” 3. Problem solving skills through exploration. Critical thinking through exploration and discovery within a range of learning contexts. 2. Discussion and debate, skills and collaboration, leading and interaction with others. Read: Technology and how it helps us In collaboration with her peers the learner identified and explored the features and functions of a range of technological devices. She demonstrated her understanding of how of these devices can help people by compiling a record of their uses. Watch: Knex challenge board adult demos When planning her presentation on the life of Robert Burns, the learner investigated various features available on PowerPoint eg animation, transitions and page designs. After this initial exploration and discovery the learner selected the features that she thought to be most appropriate for her presentation and appealing to her classmates. Working collaboratively, the learner explored ways to build a robot from a Knex kit. She learnt about the principles of programming to effectively complete a series of increasingly complex challenge boards – novice, intermediate and ultimate. She made predictions and alterations through thinking critically. Through exploring the features of information technology, the learner effectively communicated by email; she accessed Glow from home, selected appropriate commands from the toolbar and successfully sent and received emails. She applied these skills on a number of occasions and in response to a range of topics. “It was so exciting when we opened the kit and found what was inside! I had to ensure that all of the parts were used and that the wires were connected properly or the robot wouldn’t move at all. Then the challenge began. “I enjoyed using Glow mail to share information with my teacher and classmates. I learned how to find my friends, change fonts, add to a class Blog and send emails to my teacher from home.” Significant Aspect of Learning 2 (1st level) Understanding how technological products work and how they affect people: 1. Critical thinking through exploration and discovery within a range of learning contexts. 2. Discussion and debate, skills and collaboration, leading and interaction with others. 3. Problem solving skills through exploration. The learner was assigned a homework task to investigate the variety of technological devices used within the home. “The Blog was a really interesting way to take part in discussions. I could add my ideas whenever I thought of them, even at home on my IPad.” As part of a cooperative lesson class builder she was then required to share her findings. This activity consolidated her own learning whilst facilitated that of her peers. The learner interacted with her classmates remotely by using the class Blog. She consolidated her learning by using the Blog at home as well as in school. Watch: Sharing technology homework The learner successfully engaged in dialogue with her peers by adding relevant comments under appropriate headings. Watch: Using Roamer In collaboration with her peers, the learner successfully navigated a programmable floor robot around a series of obstacles. She completed this task by first discussing the problem caused by the obstacles. She then decided upon the route the device should take and then worked out the correct sequence of commands. “Katie wanted to use a different background colour for each slide but when we tried it out we both agreed it looked better if we used the same colour.” The learner demonstrated her ability to work with a partner in order generate and present an animated PowerPoint on the life of Robert Burns. She discussed her ideas and demonstrated compromise when deciding on the facts to be included and how the information should be displayed. Critical thinking through exploration and discovery within a range of learning contexts. 2. Discussion and debate, skills and collaboration, leading and interaction with others. 3. Problem solving skills through exploration. The learner was introduced to the basic functions of email. She was then given a series of tasks in order to demonstrate her learning; she successfully accessed her email, sent and received messages and saved emails in different files. “I was happy that I learnt to open emails and read messages from my teacher and friends. It was like storing letters in different drawers except it was on a computer.” “I sometimes forgot to add the person’s email before I sent it!”. “I had to practise dragging my emails into the right folder, it was tricky at first”. It was tricky deciding on the commands but then I thought about the toys and how well I managed it. It was helpful to write the commands down so I didn’t forget. The learner worked cooperatively to research Scottish inventors and inventions. The learner investigated the keyboard commands used in the Logo program. She selected relevant information from reliable sources by demonstrating effective problem solving skills; she noted that after a number of unsuccessful internet searches it became apparent that ‘key words’ were paramount in finding the information required. She applied her knowledge of sequence based commands, acquired from her experience of using a programmable floor robot, to successfully navigate an avatar to a specified location. It was evident that her navigational skills had developed as she was able to devise a number of different routes in which the avatar could reach its specified location. She achieved this by a process of trial and error. Read: Inventor/inventions sheets Read: Using Logo and Roamer problem solving sheets Watch: Internet information searching
