LITURGICAL YEAR – LENT Second Level RERC Exemplar Context for learning These experiences took place during the liturgical season of Lent. Throughout the level, pupils had already gained essential knowledge that underpinned this work. During Lent, pupils participated in a variety of opportunities within assemblies, class work and whole school liturgical celebrations to develop their understanding of Lent, with a deeper understanding of the meaning of the Good Samaritan and the implications of the lives of the Saints as example to Christians today This evidence aims to demonstrate an example of some of the evidence that could be captured to assess the Second Level outcomes stated above. Pupils participated in a variety of fundraising activities for local, national and international charities and understood that by contributing to this they were demonstrating love and care for others. I know that Jesus reached out to all people, particularly to the marginalised, vulnerable and poor, and acknowledged their human dignity I understand that, by this example, and through his parables, Jesus invites us to do the same: The Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25 – 37) Reign of God RERC 2-21a I can recognise how my relationship with God and others can be shaped by the values of Jesus’ kingdom. 2. I understand that the call to follow Jesus sometimes involves making sacrifices, putting others before myself or giving up things which are contrary to the values of Jesus. RERC 2-20a I know that I have been called by God to grow in love, justice and peace in my relationships with others. 3. I have been given opportunities within the school community to demonstrate love and care for the poor in my local, national and international communities. 4. I have studied themes in justice and peace in the lives of St. John Bosco, St. Vincent de Paul or the Venerable Margaret Sinclair. 1. I wrote a story about how a homeless 1. Following on from reading the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25 – 37), pupils demonstrated their understanding of the passage through creating a cartoon strip or writing the story in their own words in a modern setting. The parable of the Good Samaritan shows us how to treat people, even people who are different from us. 2. Pupils recalled their previous knowledge of Jesus’ teachings and actions in Luke’s gospel. Pupils then reflected on these examples and considered implications for their own lives, including times when it is hard to follow Jesus. Following this, pupil created prayers to use during Lent. 1. We used our Bible referencing skills to find the passages and read the parables. 1. We used Luke’s Gospel and gathered some of the parables Jesus told and some of the things Jesus did. 1. Using Jesus’ example, we can try to live Good lives especially during Lent. 1. Prayer is important as it’s our time to talk to God. You can pray anywhere, at any time… it doesn’t have to be out loud, God knows what we want in our hearts. 2. & 4. I chose to research the life of 4. Pupils were given the opportunity to research the life of a saint. Pupils could choose between The Venerable Margaret Sinclair or St. John Bosco. Pupils then chose how to present this information. Some pupils created a poster, some a newspaper article and others used diary extracts. This demonstrated the knowledge of the saints that they had gained. St. John Bosco. I used the Internet to find and check information from a variety of sources. I decided to present my information as a newspaper front page because it would be eye-catching. We can learn a lot from the lives of Saints… some of them had really hard lives. 2. & 3. I can follow their example by teaching my little sister gentleness rather than aggression and be more cheery. 1. & 2.
