Second Level Studies – What does it look/sound like?
Learning Statements
● perform music from a range of styles and cultures demonstrating
accurate pitch, melody, rhythm, timbre and dynamics.
● give and follow performance directions and use musical notation.
 describe and evaluate their own and others’ work against given criteria
Learning Intention
To understand how rewarding performing as part of a group can be.
We had to watch our teacher
carefully and follow her
directions. When the audience
cheered and clapped loudly, I
felt really proud.
I was excited and
nervous about singing
on stage in a proper
music venue. I had to
remember to stand
properly.
Significant Aspects
Presenting
● show they can perform and present for different audiences and be part
of an audience for others.
● demonstrate working collaboratively as well as learning independently.
Evaluating and Appreciating
● have opportunities to analyse, explore and reflect.
Experiences and Outcomes
● I have experienced the energy and excitement of presenting/performing for
audiences and being part of an audience for other people’s
presentations/performances.2-01a
● I can sing and play music from a range of styles and cultures, showing skill
and using performance directions and/or musical notation. 2-16a
Prior Learning
Pupils have gained further experience in presenting to live
audiences in a variety of settings. This has built their confidence
in performing on stage and required of them to think reflectively
on their audiences’ needs and expectations. Learning a variety of
repertoire has developed their performing skills as well as their
knowledge of music theory and composers.
Learning Intention
To perform in the local community for other peoples enjoyment and
experience the excitement of performing live music.
Success Criteria
● I can apply the appropriate beater/stick technique.
The atmosphere when we played
outdoors at the Midsummer carnival
was great! I think we were focused
and played our pieces really well.
We kept in time with each other.
Learning Intention
Prepare and perform contrasting pieces of music to a live audience.
Watch learners playing the
samba
Watch learners singing in
the choir
Success Criteria
● I understand the variety of signals a conductor can give.
● I can maintain eye contact with the conductor when performing.
● Showing an awareness of occasion, I know how to present myself on
stage
(posture, communication, respect, discipline.)
The learner was very motivated when
performing in public. By reviewing
recordings of their performance the
learner realised the importance of
watching the conductor at all times and
not being distracted by the audience or
occasion. The learner is able to hear the
effect created by changes in dynamics,
giving a better understanding of
composer’s
directions.
Through
participation in a range of breathing
exercises and games at the start of each
rehearsal
the
learner
showed
understanding how the whole choir needs
to phrase songs effectively in order to
create a good musical performance.
The learner read the musical
notation and understood how their
part enhanced the arrangement.
They were able to hear how their
playing contributed to the overall
performance of the class.
I liked working with a partner because we
helped each other by pointing out any
mistakes. We discussed the pieces and graded
their difficulty using traffic lights. We used
two stars and a wish to figure out what we
were doing well and what we needed to work
on.
Watch the P7 concert
I had to concentrate when I played the
metallophone. The music was tricky to
learn but sounded really good when we
played the different parts altogether.
Success Criteria
● I can read music from a score when I am playing instruments.
● I can follow basic musical terms when performing.
● I can apply an appropriate beater/stick technique.
Peer and self assessment is
an important part of
continuous
improvement.
This picture and video clip
clearly demonstrate how the
learner develops both their
playing technique and their
listening skills. The learner
is then able to provide
feedback and use advice
given to improve sound
quality and increase their
repertoire.
The photograph and video clip
shows the learner enjoying
their performance at a
Midsummer carnival and
demonstrating awareness of
audience throughout.
The
learner has worked hard
within a group setting to
collaboratively learn and
rehearse the set. The learner
is demonstrating appropriate
beater/stick technique while
performing with the rest of the
group and responding to cues.
I loved singing in the
Town Hall – our
voices echoed and
sounded nice. The
business people there
gave us a big
applause.
Enhancing performance opportunities
Success Criteria
● I can adapt to the venue I am performing in.
Success Criteria
● I am proud to represent my school and take
responsibility for showing it in a good light.
This photo, taken at a local
festival
in
a
marquee,
demonstrates how the learner
focused on their presenting
skills to convey to their
audience the infectious mood of
lively samba music. Prior to
their performance the learner
spend a lot of time working
collaboratively to slowly layer
the rhythms; developing their
listening skills and ensuring the
correct beater patterns are used.
It was amazing to win the
choir cup. We had to sing the
harmony lines confidently
and add the dynamics. We
had to make sure we got the
breathing right.
We had to get the beater work right and
start with the correct hand. It is important
to listen carefully to the beat and to enjoy
playing. I could tell the audience liked it
because some of them started dancing.
Being invited to sing
as a backing choir
with a local band
reiterated to the
second level learners
the importance of
presentation
and
professionalism on
stage.
Success Criteria
● I have an awareness of how to convey the
feeling/mood of music I am performing.
Learning Intentions
● Perform a repertoire of pieces to a live audience.
● Consider what the audience would like to hear and discuss what
music would be appropriate.
● Develop presenting skills and confidence in performing.
● Evaluate one’s own performance and that of others.
We had to show the
musicians that we knew how
to organise ourselves on
stage as well as doing our
best singing.
Listen to Angel Whispers
The learner benefits from a
range
of
performance
opportunities. Presenting to
an
audience
developed
breadth and depth of
learning and improved the
learner’s confidence. The
learner acknowledged the
need to combine all the
elements of choral singing in
their performance, which
was a winning performance.
The learner has had opportunities to perform
for different groups. After the recital the
learner had an opportunity to meet
individually with some of their audience and
receive feedback on and appreciation of their
programme.
The learner realised how
important and valued their performance is.
Success Criteria
● I can perform a programme in a
care setting which is stimulating and
enjoyable for the listeners.
The elderly people really enjoyed
our visit. Some of them knew
the words and sang along. One
of them even started crying
because he thought we sounded
so good. They wrote us a nice
letter and invited us back to sing.
The learner took responsibility for
selecting a variety of songs to create an
entertaining programme. The learner
showed understanding of the importance
of considering the type of performance,
the audience and the venue. Through
listening and talking the learner was able
to make informed choices and agree a
programme appropriate to the occasion.
Success Criteria
● I can show an awareness of occasion and I
know how to present myself on stage.
 I can follow directions and know when it
is my turn to perform whilst performing
with a band.
We had to show the
musicians that we knew how
to organise ourselves on stage
as well as doing our best
singing. We had to listen
carefully to know when it was
our turn to sing. It was very
exciting singing along with a
band.
We chose a variety of Christmas
carols, old and new, that we
thought would appeal to our
audience.
My Granny really
enjoyed the concert. The museum
is a good venue to sing in because
it has a high ceiling and big
windows
making
it
good
acoustically.
Success Criteria
● I can discuss and evaluate my performance with others.
