Construction Engineering
Technology
Modern houses, commercial buildings and
roadways have one important common element:
They are designed and built literally from the
ground up by people skilled at applying current
construction practices. If you have ever marveled
at how a skyscraper is built or how the complex
climate control system in an office building
operates, then K-State Salina’s construction
engineering technology program might be a
good choice for you.
Careers
Graduates of the construction engineering
technology option are in high demand to
perform a variety of job functions, including
materials testing, site surveying, cost estimating,
project coordination and many others on both
building and highway construction projects.
The program emphasizes the application
of engineering principles to the solution of
problems related to the construction industry.
Facilities
Laboratory facilities used in the construction
engineering technology program provide a
hands-on learning environment with state-of-theart equipment and software. Facilities include wellequipped computer laboratories for computeraided design, or CAD; cost estimating; and project
planning. Modern electronic surveying equipment
including GPS gives students experience in site
layout for construction projects. Other construction
laboratory facilities are devoted to soil, aggregate
and concrete testing; electrical and mechanical
systems equipment; and materials strength testing
equipment.
High school preparation
The construction engineering technology program
is designed for students interested in the practical
application of construction techniques and
materials. The ability to think through a problem in a
logical, step-by-step manner is very important in this
field, as is a genuine interest in hands-on laboratory
activities. High school studies should concentrate on
mathematics, communications and physical sciences
with related laboratory activities.
The program
The program is built upon a strong foundation of
science, mathematics, applied technical courses
and interpersonal communications designed to
meet current industry needs. Courses in technical
graphics with CAD (surveying, material testing,
construction computer applications, electrical and
mechanical systems, engineering economics and
estimating) provide a broad range of technical skills
with which to pursue a career in the construction
industry. These are complemented by required and
elective courses in communications, management,
humanities, social sciences or business.

Undergraduate degrees
Although most construction engineering
technology graduates go directly into industry
upon receiving their associate degrees, other
graduates continue their education in one of the
following academic programs to expand their
career options:
Associate degree, construction
engineering technology
Bachelor’s degree, technology
management
64 semester hours
Students with career interests in management may
continue their studies at K-State Salina by obtaining
the Bachelor of Science degree in technology
management. The technical expertise in the
construction engineering technology associate
degree is complemented by additional course
work in management, accounting, economics,
mathematics and related general education areas.
