W elcome to the 2015-2016 season of events in the School of Music,

Theatre, and Dance. On behalf of the school, its students, faculty and staff,

I offer sincere thanks and best wishes to Dr. Gary Mortenson, who was the school’s inaugural director. Through the vision and tireless efforts of

Dr. Mortenson; the visible and tangible support of President Kirk Schulz,

Provost April Mason and Dean Peter Dorhout; the astounding gifts from friends and alumni; and the attendance of so many patrons who help bring performances to life, the school’s development has underscored the importance of the arts to our campus, community and beyond.

This brochure reflects the artistry of our three programs and the leadership of the school’s associate directors who coordinate their efforts — Dr. Nora

Lewis, music; Jennifer Vellenga, theatre; and Julie Pentz, dance. In the coming year, theatre audiences will experience main stage events in the

Mark A. Chapman Theatre in Nichols Hall, McCain Auditorium and the recently completed Purple Masque Theatre in West Memorial Stadium. In fact, the première performance of Forward by visiting guest artist, Chantal

Bilodeau, will take place in the new Purple Masque. Winter Dance and

Spring Dance performances will feature ballet, jazz, modern, tap and

West African styles. The music program will host more than 180 events, including ensemble concerts, faculty and student recitals, workshops, festivals, and guest artist performances. Many of those performance dates are listed in this season brochure for your convenience. In the spring semester, watch for performance events including As You Like It, that honor the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, and be sure to visit the Beach Museum of Art to see First Folio! The Book that Gave Us

Shakespeare, a national traveling exhibition from the Folger Shakespeare

Library. Our university was selected as the state’s host for this treasured book, published in 1623.

I invite you to experience the rich variety of performing arts presented by the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. Thanks for helping us bring the

K-State Arts Corridor to life!

Sincerely,

Kurt Gartner

Forward

By Chantal Bilodeau

2:30 p.m., February 14

Purple Masque Theatre, West Stadium

Set in Norway, this new play by playwright-in-residence, Chantal Bilodeau, presents a poetic history of climate change from the initial passion that drove

Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen to the North Pole, to the consequences of over a century of fossil fuel addiction. The play progresses backwards from 2013 to 1895, and zeroes in on 40 characters whose day-to-day lives illustrate how the choices we make often have unintended consequences. A compassionate look at the legacies we leave behind, this première production asks what we are willing to do for love. Watch for events to meet the playwright. A president’s reception is planned for the Feb. 12 performance. Directed by Jennifer Vellenga.

Menotti’s opera and Cold War-era thriller won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in

1950, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical Play, and ran for more than 280 performances on Broadway. It depicts a woman in an unnamed totalitarian country trying desperately to secure a visa so she, her child and her mother may join her dissident husband across the border. Directed by Reginald

Pittman.

As You Like It

By William Shakespeare

Mark A. Chapman Theatre, Nichols Hall

Fleeing persecution in her uncle’s court, Rosalind is accompanied by her cousin

Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden. They encounter a number of memorable characters, including the court fool, Touchstone and the melancholy Jacques. Featuring one of Shakespeare’s most famous and oft-quoted speeches, “All the world’s a stage” and “A fool! A fool! I met a fool in the forest…” this play remains a favorite romantic comedy among audiences around the world.

This production is part of a semesterlong series of campus and community events honoring the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Directed by David Mackay.
