PREFACE
The Office of Institutional Research is pleased to present the 2015-2016 edition of the
Academic Data Reference Book (ADRB). The current edition joins 45 previous issues to form a
continuum of information about academic aspects of American University. In 1971 the ADRB
was described as an ‘experimental’ first edition and the goal of current publication follows the
tradition established 45 years ago. It evolves along in providing the community with reliable and
useful information related to these 6 sections: student enrollment, admission, retention and
graduation rates, degrees conferred, course enrollment, and faculty.
The web version of the ADRB, which includes consecutive historical editions beginning
in 2005 and some editions dating back to 1971, can be accessed from the historical editions of
the OIRA website. Please check this site occasionally for any updates or revisions to this report.
http://www.american.edu/provost/oira/Academic-Data-Reference-Book.cfm.
The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment extends its thanks to those
individuals and offices that contributed suggestions, information, and other assistance in the
preparation of the 2015-2016 Academic Data Reference Book. Please feel free to contact Karen
Froslid Jones at (202) 885-6155 or kfroslid@american.edu if you have any suggestions,
comments, or questions regarding this publication.

DEFINITIONS
Abroad at AU
Program for students from other countries who want to study at AU for a
limited period of time, usually a year or a semester. Abroad at AU students
are non-degree.
AU Abroad
Program allowing AU undergraduate students to study abroad in an AUsponsored program.
Census Date
The day on which AU takes a snapshot of student data to ensure consistent
reporting for each semester. The fall and spring census dates are at the end
of the fifth week of classes for those semesters. The summer census date is
the same as the fall census date. All admission and enrollment reporting in
the ADRB is as of the census date.
Full-time
Student status that is derived by student term credit hours: undergraduate,
degree-seeking, nondegree, and certificate students and law students taking
12 or more credit hours; graduate degree-seeking, nondegree and certificate
students taking 9 or more credit hours during fall and spring, and 4 or more
credit hours during summer. (Full-time is 4 credit hours for graduate students
as of summer 2013).
Full-time Equivalent
The number of full-time students, plus the total student credit hours of parttime students divided by the minimum number of credits to be considered a
full-time student at the same academic level. (Note: This calculation changed
in 2009 so care should be taken when making historical comparisons.)
Full-time Faculty
An AU employee hired full-time in a faculty position. Full-time faculty can
fall into one of several categories including teaching, administrative, library,
and research depending upon their primary responsibilities as defined in their
contract.
Full-time Teaching Faculty
Full-time faculty where the majority percentage of their time is to be devoted
to teaching, with smaller percentages for scholarly research and service.
Hybrid Course
A course in which portions of instruction are delivered in a physical
environment as well as online.
Law
Includes all students in the Washington College of Law, including JD, LLM,
SJD, nondegree, and certificate.
Maintaining Matriculation
One of three enrollment options for graduate students not enrolled in credit
course work but utilizing university services which allows graduate students
to maintain their enrollment. (The other options are Continuing Enrollment
and Doctoral Dissertation enrollment.)
New Student
A student admitted to AU who has not previously been enrolled at AU at the
admitted academic level.
Non-AU AU Abroad
Program allowing non-AU students to study abroad through an AUsponsored program.
Nondegree
Students enrolled in regular university courses who have not been admitted
to a degree program. Unless otherwise noted, excludes law.
Online Course
A course in which instruction is not delivered in a physical environment.
Part-time
Undergraduate, degree-seeking, nondegree and certificate students and law
students taking fewer than 12 credit hours. Graduate degree-seeking,
nondegree, and certificate students taking fewer than 9 credit hours during
fall and spring semester; less than 4 during summer sessions (As of summer
2013).
Term Faculty
Full-time faculty who are not tenured nor on tenure track.
Student Credit Hours
The sum of the credit hours per student course registration.

*Students in combined programs and Interdisciplinary Studies are listed in the school / department with which they are
affiliated.
**Duplicated count is the sum of all students majoring in a particular program. A student with two majors will be listed
twice. Therefore, totals here will not match enrollment in table 1-1 and 1-6
***School/College counts depict the total number of students who have a major within each school. In cases where both
a student's primary and secondary major fall within the same school the total reflects that student only once.
Excludes SPExS, nondegree, certificate and non-AU AU Abroad students.
Enrollment as of Census Date October 3, 2015.

*In AY 2015-2016 AAUP changed its definition of instructional
faculty and allowed institutions, under certain conditions, to report
full-time term faculty as Instructors regardless of their rank at the
institution. Therefore, previous years' data is no longer comparable.
AAUP Salary ratings for 2015-2016 are expected to be released
April, 2016.
