Second Level Studies- What does it look like?
Learning statements
Create images and objects that demonstrate some accuracy of representation from
direct observation.
Select specific media and show increasing understanding of their properties through the
images and objects that have been created and the techniques and technology used.
Demonstrate understanding of all the visual elements and more challenging concepts
such as proportion, scale and perspective.
LI: We are learning to observe and record the shapes and details of objects and
represent these using different materials.
Learner’s comments:
“The hair looks a good texture”
“Their shading makes the face look
realistic”
Learner’s
Comments:
“They have sketched
realistic shapes”
“They drew lots of
flowers”
“Good shading”
“Nice angles”
Learner’s Comments:
“There is a nice blending of
colours from dark to light
around the bottle making it
look 3D”
SC: I can use tints and shades and
show the light source to record areas
of dark and light.
Demonstrate that they can be creative and express
themselves in different ways.
Will be able to express themselves, think innovatively,
meet challenges positively and find imaginative
solutions to problems.
Have opportunities to nurture and develop their
expressive arts interests and skills
Pupils have gained further experience in observational drawing and combined with learning
simple techniques, a more realistic representation is being achieved.
Learners have also been developing their knowledge and understanding of visual elements and
different materials. They have shown a basic understanding of their properties and are becoming
increasingly controlled
in their
application.
Learner’s
comments:
Learners have experienced a range of media and different techniques and can demonstrate sound
understanding of secondary colours and an awareness of mixing tints and shades, using different
media.
Learners have had opportunities to express themselves through 3 dimensional projects using
various materials. This has consolidated their ability to create different forms and develop their
problem solving skills.
Teacher’s Comments:
This learner has achieved second level.
They are able to make informed choices
about what to draw and which materials
would best suit the subject.
The learner has demonstrated the ability
to observe and record different shapes
and angles with some degree of accuracy.
The portrait shows good control of the
charcoal with some areas of heavy
shading under the chin and lighter areas
around the mouth. There is a good use of
dark and light to create the texture of the
hair.
The flowers show the Learner can record
three dimensionally, to capture different
angles and include fine detail.
The bottles show the Learner has thought
about the light source and shows areas of
light and shadows in the appropriate
areas. Demonstrating an understanding
of paint they have mixed many tints and
shades which have then been applied and
blended to give the 3 dimensional
qualities to their work.
LI: We are learning to select and apply a range
of media and techniques to convey the
qualities of a subject.
SC: I can select and use a range of
media to record an accurate likeness.

Experiences & Outcomes
Through observing and recording from my experiences across the curriculum, I can create images and objects
which show my awareness and recognition of detail.
EXA 2-04a
I can create and present work that shows developing skill in using the visual elements and concepts.
EXA 2-03a
Inspired by a range of stimuli, I can express and communicate my ideas, thoughts and feelings through activities
within art and design. EXA 2-05a
Prior Learning
SC: I can observe and record to create
depth and perspective.
SC: I can observe and record adding fine
detail and shading realistically.
Significant Aspects of Learning - Creating
LI- Learning Intentions
SC- Success Criteria
Teacher’s Comments:
Here the Learner is
achieving Second Level
by selecting their own
rainforest animal and
creating an interesting
composition with the
animal being the focus.
The Learner has achieved
a realistic background by
mixing many tones of
green and grey and using
them to add details to
the leaves and shadows
on the stone. Great care
has been taken to paint
the different colours and
patterns of the spider
and the hairy texture has
been achieved through
careful brushwork.
Learner’s Comments:
“All the colours have been
mixed realistically”
“They have added a shadow
under the spider to make it
look 3D”
“There is good lines that
make the spider look hairy”
LI: We are learning to use the design process to create a 3D model
inspired by the work of a famous artist.
Learner’s
Comments:
“The final model
looks just like the
design”
“It’s good that it
stands up, that
must have been
hard”
“The colours have
been mixed and
the painting is
neat”
SC: I can create a plan and design for a 3D model.
I can select and use media to construct a 3D model.
I can include features or techniques observed from a chosen artist’s
work.
Teacher’s Comments:
This Learner has secured Second Level by clearly expressing themselves with this mod
roc model. They have taken the artist Miro’s paintings as inspiration and worked
through many different ideas before choosing their favorite to take forward into a final
piece. The Learner has used interesting shapes to come up with a unique idea and
worked out their colours before painting the model. The pattern chosen is clear and
adds more detail to the piece. The Learner has manipulated the materials to turn this 2
dimensional design into a 3 dimensional model demonstrating appropriate use of the
media and good problem solving.
LI: We are learning to use colour, dimension, shape and
pattern to develop an understanding of composition.
Learner’s
Comments:
“The curly
hair helps
make him
look crazy”
“The colours
and black
details really
stand out”
Teacher’s Comments:
In this extremely creative piece
the Learner has achieved Second
level with their unique ideas and
control over the materials. The
learner has used limited colours
which have been combined and
layered to add details and
pattern.
The clear use of shape is
enhanced by the curling and
folding of paper to add 3
dimensional elements to the
piece.
SC: I can use a variety of techniques and materials to create an
effective design
