NEW Advisor Kristin Richards (IPCR, EPGA, IER, IE) leaving SIS - Interim Advisor Assignments
Per the announcement sent on Friday to program listservs, Kristin Richards' last day at SIS will be Friday, February 6.
Kristin will be leaving to take a position at Pace University in New York City. Until the Graduate Advising office hires a
new advisor, students in the IPCR, EPGA, IER and IE programs will be assigned an interim advisor beginning Monday,

NEW Summer 2015 Practica Application Deadline Extended
The application deadline for Summer 2015 practica has been extended to March 1 to coincide with the application
deadline for the Fall 2015 practica, which will be announced soon. Students will be asked to rank their practica
preferences including both the summer and fall semesters. For more information about the practica courses being offered
in summer 2015, and practicum eligibility requirements, please visit the SISAbroad website or the SIS Practica website.
Spring 2015 Skills Institutes

Apply to Graduate for Spring 2015
Students planning to complete all degree requirements in the Spring 2015 semester must apply to graduate via their
myAU portal (under Academics – Apply to Graduate). We recommend that you complete the application as soon as
possible (the application takes less than 5 minutes) so that your advisor can begin reviewing your graduation eligibility for
spring.

event. Students and alumni seeking jobs or internships may easily connect with alumni and employers offering
opportunities and advice. Enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres and refreshments while mingling with students, alumni,
faculty, staff, and employers.
NEW First Wednesday Writing Workshop for Graduate Students
Wednesday, February 4, 5:30-6:30pm, Graduate Resource Center
Consultants from the AU Writing Center will offer tips and address your questions about writing at the graduate level.
Want to talk about writing proposals or abstracts? Getting started with your thesis or creating an annotated bibliography?
Sign up for the workshop -- simply drop by the Writing Center, call us (202-885-2991), or email wcenter@american.edu
and leave your name and the writing topic you're interested in talking about. We'll bring the snacks and handouts.
Graduate students from all programs are welcome.

NEW GSC Workshop: Introduction to Data Visualization in Excel
Wednesday, February 11, 6:00-8:00pm, CTRL lab (Hurst 202)
Learn how to create visual tools to effectively present data in your papers and presentations. The SIS Graduate Student
Council is hosting a free workshop with the Center for Teaching, Research and Learning Lab, which will teach students
how to use the formula function in Excel to make a variety of graphs. Pizza will be served. If you have questions, email

NEW Setting the Stage for Sustainability: Global Environmental Politics and Natural Resources and Sustainable
Development Alumni Conference

Come to this first ever GEP/NRSD alumni conference for a chance to take stock of our collective efforts, to reconnect with
old friends and make new ones, and to examine the nature of effective environmental engagement. Reception for current

SIS Industry Days: Department of Energy
Friday, February 27, 1:30-3:30pm, Department of Energy, 1000 Independence Ave. SW
SIS, the AU Alumni Association, the SIS Alumni Chapter, the SIS Graduate Student Council, and the AU Career Center
invite SIS graduate students and alumni to an SIS Industry Days event at the Department of Energy. This event will be
hosted on site at the Department of Energy and will feature a panel discussion with SIS alumni currently working at the
agency. Details for this event, including arrival instructions, security requirements, and AU alumni panelists, will be
forthcoming. Registration for these events fill up quickly, so register today!
