ESPAÑOL 1 & 2 2015-2016 Sra. Smith jsmith2@ggusd.us www.laquintahs.org 714) 663-6315 Syllabus, Rules, and Expectations ¡Hola! Me llamo Señora Smith. I want to welcome you to the exciting world of Español! We will focus on the four areas of language mastery: reading, writing, listening and speaking, all the while having lots of fun! The focus will be on building vocabulary and familiarizing you with the grammatical structures of Spanish with the ultimate goal of helping you use Spanish in contexts and environments outside of the Spanish classroom. We will speak lots of Spanish in class to get you ready. Since we all learn in different ways, we will be doing a variety of activities, orally and written: lectures, note taking, writing, small group and paired oral activities (communication), language games, skits, music, and projects. We will be using the textbook ¡En español!, which you received during registration. You will be required to bring the textbook with you everyday to class and to return it in good condition at the end of the year. It is recommended that you cover the book to avoid damage. Daily materials: sharpened pencils with erasers and a pen 8 ½ x 11 college ruled spiral notebook (at least 100 pages) with a pocket for loose papers textbook (En español) a dictionary is recommended, but optional monthly calendar Classroom Expectations: o Be kind and considerate. o Be on time and in your seat when the bell rings, ready to learn. o Use appropriate, non-offensive language. o Be respectful of yourself, others, and others’ property. o Please, don’t distract me from teaching and don’t distract others from learning. o Follow all other school rules. o Please keep our classroom clean! o Keep your cell phone on silent and out of sight at all times. o ¡Habla en español! If problems arise, we will discuss them first together, and you will lose participation points. Consequent offenses will warrant detentions, a call home, as well as office referrals. Homework: Homework is an integral part of this class because it provides necessary practice for the topics discussed. Not completing your homework can negatively affect your performance and, thus, your grade. I will check homework for completion daily, and you will receive a stamp on your homework calendar as a way of documenting that you did complete it. For this reason it is important that you do not lose your calendar! Study Guides and other important printed material will be posted on www.laquintahs.org on my homepage. Grading (might be subject to minor changes if necessary): Each student will be evaluated based on oral activities, written tests and quizzes (spelling, vocabulary, grammar, chapter tests), homework, in-class/at-home projects, completion of classwork, as well as in-class participation (which includes speaking Spanish). To receive full participation points, you need to bring all the materials, participate in all class activities, get to work immediately at the beginning of class, and adhere to our classroom procedures, which will be discussed during the first days of school. Short quizzes (vocabulary, a grammatical point, spelling) and a unit test will be given about once every month. Please don’t ask me for extra credit assignments. Extra credit points will be awarded throughout the year for great participation, answers, questions, extra effort, etc. Grades will be based on the following percentages: A = 90 % B = 80 % C = 70 % D = 60 % F = 59 % and below The components of a grade are the following (subject to minor changes): 60% Chapter Tests, Finals, Written/Oral Final Projects & Presentations (Summative) 40% Quizzes, Participation, HW/CW Calendar (Formative) Attendance and make-up policy: Attendance is extremely important because each day we will be learning about and discussing a lot of different topics. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notes and/or assignments from your classmates. You will have one make-up day for each excused absent day to make-up class work and homework. If you miss a test or quiz during your absence, you will have two weeks to make it up before school, during lunch, or after school. Again, it is your responsibility to contact me to make these arrangements. If the test or quiz is not made up within that time you will receive a zero. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to me at lunch or after school, or contact me via e-mail. I look forward to a GREAT year in Español with you!! Sra. Smith
