Introduction to Study Abroad: Madrid, Spain The Capital City: the Political, Economic and Cultural Center of Spain Seven week hybrid course with a one week in Country visit during Spring Break – March 19 – 26, 2016 This seven week hybrid course includes online asynchronous sessions, live - in person class sessions and a oneweek in country visit to Madrid. Madrid is in the center of Spain on a plateau that is 650 meters above sea level in the center of the Iberian peninsula. The week-long, in country portion of this course provides students with an introduction into the culture, cuisine, and history of Madrid's 21 districts, and students will live in the heart of Madrid. They will sample the renowned cuisine of Spain in various Tapas bars, tour museums along the Paseo del Prado, which includes Prado Museum, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, and a museum of Modern Art. Students may also visit Retiro Park which houses the Crystal Palace and an exceptional Botanical Garden, the Royal Palace of Madrid, and Cibeles Palace. Students can explore the architecturally diverse neighborhoods that includes Baroque Classicism, Neo Gothic, and Art Deco, as well as the numerous outdoor sculptures and fountains. Spain’s universities are world famous for their foreign language centers, making it an ideal country for Spanish language immersion. Youtube Transportation Students will fly from New York, Newark, or Philadelphia to Spain. Students will travel with faculty and other students from the college as a group. Once on the ground, students will meet with groups from other colleges. Accommodation Students will stay in a Madrid hostel.
