II. Advance Warning Procedures
In the event of advance warning of an impending hurricane or other severe storm, the
Director of Libraries and Libraries Staff should work together to consider the
following information and suggestions, and should take action as they deem
appropriate.
A. It has been determined how well the Libraries could withstand a storm.
1. Neilson Library: according to Facilities, ground water around the library is
relatively high. There is a real risk of water seepage at the foundation. Any
significant improvements to reduce the risk of seepage would be extremely
costly. There is no significant risk of wind damage. The building has
undergone major renovations over the last several years, and in the process
has had structural reviews and corrections where required. The foundation is
secure.
2. Branch libraries: pending
3. West Street Storage Facility: pending
B. In the event of a power outage on campus, most large College buildings have
emergency generators that provide egress lighting and heat.
C. Consult with Facilities (x2400) and Campus Police (x2490) to see whether
library staff can aid in the preparedness effort of the libraries in any way.
Consult with Facilities to make sure that loose items outside the building (book
drop, trash cans, bicycle racks, and benches) are moved indoors or otherwise
secured.
D. Due to the large numbers of library materials stored below ground level or near
windows in Neilson Library, it would be impractical to move them in an
advance-warning situation. It is recommended that steps be taken in the future to
alleviate these conditions.
Branch libraries: pending
E. Monitor library shelving in areas with a history of ceiling leaks or water damage
and cover them with plastic sheeting if necessary
1. Neilson Library: level 3 north and south, ceiling windows on level 3 north,
emergency exit door on level B west
2. Branch Libraries: pending
