From the President
If I were asked to come up with one word
to sum up the past year at NCC, that
word would be “building.” This has been
a year of building in multiple ways.
Internally, we continued building on
the College strategic plan’s five priorities:
1) student outreach
2) student completion
3) diversity and global engagement
4) community engagement
5) leading in technology
Externally, 2014 was a year
of building in highly visible ways. Construction continued at a rapid pace, culminating in a
spectacular grand opening of our new Monroe Campus in Tannersville. On the Main Campus,
we broke ground and began building a new residence hall that will soon allow more than 600
students to live on campus.
In the community, our work building partnerships resulted in successful collaborations with
business for workforce development, as well as growth in transfer opportunities that will enable
NCC students to continue their education at four-year colleges and universities.
The year also brought success in building our resources to benefit students. A $10 million U.S.
Department of Labor grant will increase our capacity to train students in advanced manufacturing,
healthcare and transportation. This grant is precedent-setting in that Luzerne Community College
and Lehigh Carbon community colleges will join us in this collaborative initiative. A prestigious
National Science Foundation grant will build our understanding of the connection between
classroom teaching strategies and students’ graduation success. And our selection as one of the
first four colleges in the country to receive a 100,000 Strong in the Americas grant from the U.S.
State Department will help us build global partnerships consistent with our strategic priorities.
The other three recipients were the University of Arizona, the University of North Texas and the
University of Rhode Island, so we are in good company!
Through all of this work, we are building a reputation for excellence. Out of more than 1,100
community colleges nationwide, we were thrilled to be one of only 150 (and the only one in
Pennsylvania) nominated for the Aspen Prize — a biennial award that spotlights “work being
done in the most effective community colleges.”
As significant as all of this building is for the College, the real building of education is the
building of knowledge, character and lifelong opportunity for our students. I continue to be
amazed and inspired by the ways our faculty and staff live out the Northampton mission of
commitment and service to students each and every day. And I continue to be equally inspired
by the drive and resilience of our students.
Our mission statement makes it clear: “Students are the primary reason that Northampton
Community College exists.” Everything we do builds from that principle.
As you read this annual report, I thank you for your support and encourage you to continue
to think about ways you can help NCC build a bright future for our students and our community.
This is a place that truly changes lives!

BIG DAY FOR
STUDENTS AND
FOR MONROE
COUNTY
After 10 long years of preparation, anticipation, and finally
construction, NCC’s new Monroe Campus opened in August
to wide acclaim.
“Let classes begin,” proclaimed NCC’s president, Dr.
Mark Erickson, as Dr. Matt Connell, dean of the Monroe
Campus; Associate Professor of Computer Science Norman
Lippincott, Jr., student leader Bernie Goode and Professor
of Education Nancy Moreau snipped a festive ribbon.
Built to LEED gold standards with room for 5,000
students, the new “NCC Monroe” includes classrooms
and laboratories that feature state-of-the-art educational
technology, a library with futuristic lighting, a bookstore,
a food court, art studios and an art gallery, a full-size
gymnasium, a fitness center, a welcoming child care center,
room for meetings and continuing education classes,
and lots of study space. The use of natural stone, lots of
glass and native plants mirrors the beauty of the natural
environment. Each building boasts stunning views of the
surroundings.

ATHLETICS
ROUNDUP
In its sixth year competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association, the
College saw the addition of five new sports: men’s cross country, women’s cross
country, women’s tennis, men’s lacrosse and women’s soccer. Three of those sports
have already celebrated successes.
After finishing 4-8 in 2013 under head coach Megan Groh, women’s tennis bounced
back and finished 7-3 and second in Region XIX in 2014. Men’s cross country captured
the 2014 EPAC team championship in the fall of 2014, earning the program’s first
conference title. [Hold for info on men’s results, weekend of Oct 25] In women’s cross
country, Jamie Purcel captured the women’s individual EPAC championship.
Women’s volleyball continued to be the big story of Spartan Athletics in 2013-14.
The team captured the conference and Region XIX titles and advanced to the NJCAA
National Tournament, where they placed fifth and finished the season at 35-1 overall.
Emily Koehler was named Region XIX Player of the Year and was named to the NJCAA
national all-tournament team.
In women’s basketball, Katie Schickling set Northampton records for 3-pointers
in a game (12), season (89) and career (146). The twelve 3-pointers vs. Bucks County
Community College on Feb. 1, 2014, also set an NJCAA single-game record.
NCC athletes have also excelled in the classroom. Northampton placed a recordbreaking 26 student-athletes on the Region XIX Spring 2014 All-Academic Team,
including All-American golfer Jesse Bingaman and conference Players of the Year
Shelby Belzecky (softball) and Zach Sheranko (baseball). The 26 honorees topped the
old mark of 18 set in fall 2013. In order to be named to the Region XIX Spring 2014
All-Academic Team, students must achieve at least a 3.25 grade-point average while
participating in a spring sport.

Aspen Institute
College Excellence
Selection
AWARDS &
ACCOLADES
/ 12 / NCC annual report 2014
The new year brought exciting news with the
announcement that the Aspen Institute College
Excellence Program named Northampton
Community College as one of the nation’s top
150 community colleges eligible to compete for
the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College
Excellence and $1 million in prize funds.
Awarded every two years, the prize is the
nation’s signature recognition of high achievement
and performance among America’s community
colleges and recognizes institutions for exceptional
student outcomes in four areas: student learning,
certificate and degree completion, employment and
earnings, and high levels of access and success for
minority and low-income students. Colleges are
selected to compete from a national pool of more
than 1,000 public two-year colleges using publicly
available data. The 150 institutions with the
highest ranking are invited to submit an application
to demonstrate that they deliver exceptional results
for all students — including those from racial
minority and/or low-income
This is not the first national recognition that
Northampton has received for its success in helping
students attain their goals. In 2010 and again in
2013, the College was named a “Leader College”
in “Achieving the Dream,” an educational reform
movement that shares many of the same goals as
the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program.
In 2014 the College became one of the first four colleges and universities
in the country selected to participate in President Obama’s 100,000
Strong in the Americas initiative to increase study abroad between the
United States and Latin America and the Caribbean. The announcement
was made at an event at the State Department in which Vice President
Joseph Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry spoke about the
importance of international partnerships to foreign policy and economic
development.
The grant will give students studying science, technology, engineering
and mathematics at Northampton the opportunity to participate in a
summer study abroad program devoted to bringing sustainable energy
systems to a remote area of Peru. Students undertook a similar project
last summer with guidance from faculty members Christine Armstrong
and Daniel Philips. It is expected that the expansion of the program
may provide a model for other community colleges looking to enrich
the educational experience of science, technology, engineering and
mathematics students and to provide more international experiences
for their students.
National Ranking for
Leading in Technology
In rankings released in April by the Center for Digital Education,
Northampton was rated fourth in the nation among large community
colleges in the use of technology to serve students, faculty and
administrators. The purpose of the annual survey is to showcase
community colleges that provide a high level of service to their students,
faculty and communities through their use of information technology.
“Leading in Technology” is one of five areas of strategic focus
announced by Northampton a year ago. “We know that students are
learning differently, so harnessing technology to maximize student
learning is central to our college’s success and the success of our
students,” says NCC’s president, Dr. Mark Erickson. “Our focus on
enhancing infrastructure and empowering our faculty to utilize the latest
technology in their classrooms is paying dividends, so the recognition is
gratifying, but we also know there is much more to do.”
The ranking is based on how technology is used throughout the
institution. The creation of an Innovation Lab in which faculty can use
emerging technology to promote student learning garnered significant
attention this past year. Also, the new Monroe Campus incorporates
cutting-edge technology, including digital signage, video walls,
interactive projectors, tablets and computers in classrooms and science
laboratories, and advanced networking and wireless capabilities.

Building to Welcome More

A Special Place
for Veterans
HIGHLIGHTS
/ 14 / NCC annual report 2014
The year witnessed the dedication and
completion of the Susan K. Kubik Tribute
Garden Veterans Plaza. Five 10-foot-tall granite
pillars, each representing a branch of military
service, make an impressive and somber
centerpiece to the completed plaza.
Brian Smith, student, Gulf War veteran
and president of NCC’s Band of Brothers club,
called Northampton “a place that recognizes
and supports the service that veterans have
done in the past, the work that we are doing
today and the success that we will have
tomorrow.”
For the third year in a row, Northampton
Community College was named to the Military
Friendly Schools® list. The list honors the 20
percent of colleges, universities and trade
schools in the country that are doing the
most to embrace America’s military service
members, veterans and spouses as students
and ensure their success on campus.
Northampton has welcomed veterans since
the College opened in 1967. Today more than
213 veterans and active service members are
taking classes at Northampton’s campuses
in Bethlehem and Tannersville and online. In
addition to having a certifying official who
can help veterans access the educational
benefits they have earned and apply for state
and federal financial aid, the College’s support
for veterans includes a special orientation
program to help them transition to the college
environment. The Band of Brothers, a studentveteran club that focuses on veteran-related
issues on campus, is one of the most active
student organizations at the College.
A crowd of enthusiastic well-wishers and dignitaries turned
out in early spring for the ceremonial groundbreaking for
the new residence halls. When complete, an additional
300 students will join the 260-some current on-campus
residents. Northampton is the only community college in
Pennsylvania to provide on-campus housing.
President Mark Erickson thanked staff, board and
Foundation members, as well as Bethlehem Township’s
leadership. “We couldn’t do this without our wonderful
partnership with them. This residence hall will change the
lives of students and the community.”
Mardi McGuire-Closson, vice president for Student
Affairs (recently retired), spoke about the “hundreds and
hundreds” of students who have had to be turned away
because of the lack of housing on campus, underscoring
the need for the new residence hall. “Having on-campus
housing has positively impacted our student life and
athletics programs and allowed us to welcome international
students,” she said.
Chris Martin — Executive-in-Residence
Chris Martin, chairman and CEO of Martin Guitar, spent a day on campus speaking
with students and the public as the 2014 Executive-in-Residence.
During his tenure as CEO, Martin has implemented new strategies to invigorate
the Martin brand, refocusing the company on its primary strengths: steel-stringed
acoustic guitars and strings. His decade-long efforts to turn the company around
has helped them achieve impressive business milestones and reestablished the
company’s reputation worldwide for building the highest-quality guitars. Martin is
also one of the leading philanthropists in the Lehigh Valley.
Begun in 1985, NCC’s Executive-in-Residence program is funded by Jack
and Cecile Shaffer in memory of their son Hal. The program allows students to
spend time with the area’s most successful business leaders. Past Executive-inResidences have included Elmer Gates of the Fuller Company, Ed Donley of Air
Products, Robert Rodale of Rodale Press and many others.

When the winter’s many snow closings
forced the cancellation of spring break,
students decided to fight back by
organizing their own on-campus “spring

far from tropical in March, the impromptu
event included an indoor pool party. The
weather was significantly better when
student clubs came together in August to
plan one of the most well-attended Quad

2013-14
Dear Friends,
This Annual Report provides an opportunity to look back at the
remarkable work that’s been achieved by the Northampton
Community College Foundation during the past year. By any
measure, we have a huge range of fantastic accomplishments
to celebrate. These include the successful grand opening of
NCC’s new Monroe Campus, the groundbreaking and rapid
progress on the new Northampton Community College residence
halls, the launch of a new website to introduce more students
to NCC, the landing of significant grants to create new majors,
programs and partnerships, the fun we have and the support we
raise through the annual Lehigh Valley Food and Wine Festival
and much, much more.
Rather than look back, however, I hope you will accept my
invitation to look toward the future. For example, it is very
satisfying that the NCC Foundation made it possible to expand
student housing opportunities on NCC’s Main Campus, but what
comes next — bringing students from around the region and
even around the world to our classrooms — is what we’re
really looking forward to. In Monroe County, a wide range of generous donors joined the NCC Foundation
to support our brand-new, state-of-the-art campus. Now, the doors to Monroe are open. The facilities
are remarkable, and our grand opening gala was tremendous fun. But the real excitement is just
starting as students, faculty and staff begin to turn those new Monroe spaces into vibrant and
exciting learning environments.
As chair for the Northampton Community College Foundation Board of Directors, I am proud of the
work we do to raise funds for NCC. Your gifts make a difference in the life of the College and, more
importantly, in the lives of our students. But we do not measure our success simply by dollars raised.
Instead, we measure our success by the opportunities — by the beginnings — your gifts create.
As this Annual Report shows, we raised several million dollars for NCC during this past year. We
built buildings and made friends. We provided hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship awards.
We connected students with international leaders, world-class experts, regional philanthropists and
inspiring educators. We supported faculty and staff in the work of providing students with one of the
very best community colleges in the nation. Thanks to you, the Northampton Community College
Foundation made opportunities and beginnings possible every single day.
Looking ahead, I hope you’ll continue to be part of this exciting work … because we’re just
getting started.

The Mattioli Foundation:
A tradition of service and support
The Mattioli Foundation of Long Pond, Pa., carries on the legacy of Dr. Joseph “Doc” Mattioli and his
wife, Dr. Rose Mattioli. “Doc,” who passed away in 2012, founded the Pocono Raceway and was widely
recognized as a friend, philanthropist, businessman and community leader for the Poconos and beyond.
Through the Mattioli Foundation, Rose Mattioli and her family continue a remarkable tradition of service and
support.
The Pocono Raceway, widely recognized as one of the most fan-friendly venues in racing, is now led by Rose
and Doc’s grandchildren, siblings Brandon Igdalsky (president and CEO), Nicholas Igdalsky (chief operating
officer) and Ashley Igdalsky (secretary/treasurer). According to Brandon, the whole family gained invaluable
experience working at his grandfather’s side. “He left big shoes to follow behind. He learned so much
through the years, and he worked hard to pass it along to us. His legacy keeps going.”
Today, Pocono Raceway attracts hundreds of thousands of fans and generates over $250 million for the
local economy each year. In fact, the raceway’s three marquee race weekends — two NASCAR races and
one Indy car race — are the equivalent of hosting the Super Bowl in Pennsylvania every year.
Meanwhile, much like Northampton Community College, the Mattioli family is deeply committed to
implementing sustainable energy solutions in Monroe County. As a result, Pocono Raceway is the largest
solar-powered sports facility in the world with a “solar farm” that encompasses approximately 25 acres
and consists of almost 40,000 solar modules. The system not only satisfies the energy consumption for
the entire racing complex, it also helps power an additional 1,000 homes. Over the next 20 years, the solar
farm is expected to produce in excess of 72 million kilowatt hours and offset 3,100 metric tons of carbon
dioxide annually.
At Northampton Community College, the Mattioli Foundation has created scholarship funds to make
college as affordable as possible for Monroe County students. Pocono Raceway executives also serve NCC
students as guest lecturers, mentors and hosts for internships and service learning projects. Additionally, the
Pocono Raceway and the Mattioli Foundation provide annual support to a wide range of local organizations
including the Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the United Way, local schools and hospitals, and many more.
Following his death, “Doc” was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame.
At the induction ceremony, Brandon reflected on his grandfather’s legacy.
“We all looked up to and idolized him. His philanthropic side was phenomenal. If he had it, he would give
it. He is a legend in our family and in our community.”
Thanks to the Mattioli Foundation and the Mattioli family, that legend continues.

Led by founder Jim Petrucci, JG Petrucci Company is a premier development, design and construction firm
serving New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In fact, the signature blue and green JG Petrucci logo is a common
sight at construction projects throughout the Lehigh Valley and Pocono Mountain communities served by
NCC. The JG Petrucci sign is even on display at Northampton Community College’s Main Campus, where
the firm, which develops a wide range of industrial, office, retail and residential properties, is currently
overseeing the construction of new student housing.
Of course, JG Petrucci & Company is not a new member of the Northampton family. Jim Petrucci
is a past member of the Northampton Community College Foundation Board. He and his mom, Rosalin
Petrucci, have been longtime champions and supporters for NCC’s New Choices program, which
provides career support and training for women and single parents moving back into the workforce.
Through corporate, foundation and personal giving, the Petrucci family has also contributed to a wide
range of other Northampton Community College events and projects, including the annual Northampton
Community College Foundation Golf Tournament and NCC’s successful Leadership Lehigh Valley program.
“Our clients know that we take leadership seriously,” Jim says. “We expect everyone within our
organization to take a leadership role. It’s not just getting the job done; it really is getting it done
right. We show up every day with an old-fashioned work ethic, and we earn our clients’ respect and
appreciation by how we do our jobs.”
Jim, who was an All-Ivy League defensive tackle and co-captain for Princeton’s football team, has
been honored numerous times for community service by organizations including The March of Dimes,
Boy Scouts of America and Arc of Union County. He’s also served as chairman for the Raritan Township,
Hunterdon County Planning Board and is a trustee for Delbarton School. Additionally, JG Petrucci
Company has provided support for the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey, the Lehigh
Valley Military Affairs Council, The New Jersey National Guard Family Foundation, Valley Youth House,
Irvington, N.J. High School, and many more.
“The charitable organizations we sponsor and support provide people with opportunities,” says
Jim, who continues to make an impact at Northampton Community College along with his family and
colleagues. “They give people tools they need to succeed.”

BOARD OF TRUSTEES
A donor bill of rights
Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. To assure that philanthropy
merits the respect and trust of the general public and that donors and prospective donors can
have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support,
we declare that all donors have these rights:
Our responsibility to you:
I. To be informed of the
organization’s mission, of
the way the organization
intends to use the donated resources
and of its capacity to
use the donations effectively for
their intended purposes.
II. To be informed of the identity of
those serving on the organization’s
governing board and to expect the
board to exercise prudent judgment
in its stewardship responsibilities.
III. To have access to the
organization’s most recent
financial statements.
IV. To be assured gifts
will be used for the purposes
for which they were given.
V. To receive appropriate
acknowledgement
and recognition.
VI. To be assured that
information about their
donation is handled with respect
and with confidentiality to the
extent provided by law.
VII. To expect that all relationships
with individuals representing
organizations of interest to the
donor will be professional in nature.
VIII. To be informed whether those
seeking donations are volunteers,
employees of the organization or
hired solicitors.
IX: To have the opportunity for
their name to be deleted from
mailing lists that an organization
may intend to share.
X. To feel free to ask questions
when making a donation and
to receive prompt, truthful and
forthright answers.

The Foundation has the
responsibility to be accountable
to our constituencies: to our
board of directors, who serve
without remuneration; to
Northampton Community College
and its leadership, faculty, staff
and students; to donors; to our
volunteers; and to our own staff.
One of the ways in which we do so
is to make accessible materials that
we believe should be available to
those who care about the mission
and success of the Northampton
Community College Foundation.
We make the following
items available:
❚ Financial audit conducted
by our external auditor.
❚ An annual report of giving
and activities, including an
honor roll of donors.
❚ Our policies on disbursement
of gift funds.
❚ Investment policies and
expenditure guidelines.
❚ Our action plan establishing
priorities.
