COMMUNICATION STUDIES You’ve always been the type of person who has multiple interests and diverse talents. You consider communication skills necessary for almost any career field, but have had a particular interest in careers that will get you in front of other people: social media, business and marketing, education, or performing arts. If you’re looking for a program that will challenge you and help you develop a stronger awareness of communication practices, Northampton’s Communication Studies Associate in Arts program can help you narrow down your focus and prepare you for a four-year institution while providing you with a comprehensive knowledge of the nature of human communication. WHY IS THIS PROGRAM FOR YOU? »» Communication Studies allows students to investigate the ways in which communication shapes both culture and identity. The program also takes you into specific courses in the field that have impacted communication studies, such as sociology and psychology. »» You’ve got future plans, and NCC encourages you to use this program to customize them; a variety of electives in the communications field are available on top of the required 12 hours of communication studies courses. »» When you transfer to pursue a BA, you can look forward to employment in a wide range of areas and a degree that will allow you to be flexible and versatile in your work. »» Many of our communication courses offer a service learning component allowing students to gain real world experience as communicators and leaders in their community. You’ll explore a variety of personal and professional interpersonal contexts and the processes of relational development. »» How are foundation, roles, and leadership associated with small groups? In the study of small group communications, you’ll develops skills in participation and presentation within a small group setting. »» How does culture influence how one communicates? You’ll interact with students on our diverse campus, working together to build relationships and achieve goals. »» How do communication theories apply to real-world interactions? You’ll develop skills in researching and analyzing communication phenomena.
