About ATOC
The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) is the body that represents the 25 train operating companies which
provide passenger and freight services. On behalf of our members, we run an “Engineering Scheme” which enables them to
work together to progress common themes such as:






Representing members in discussion of engineering issues with government, safety authorities and other bodies.
Developing and promoting coherent strategies for railway engineering in the UK.
Sharing “best practice” to improve trains’ quality and reliability.
Providing a breakdown and recovery service for trains (think RAC/Green Flag for Rail).
National Roll-out of anew train radio communications system (GSM-Rail).
Managing the transition from UK specific standards to European standard
Opportunities
Exactly what the student will be doing whilst on a year in industry
placement with ATOC will depend on the nature of the projects that they
are assigned to and the capabilities they demonstrate during the
placement.
The placement will be a great opportunity to experience the Rail Industry
first-hand and identify a future career path to success in an industry where
billions of pounds are being invested and needs 10,000 new recruits by
2019. You would be able to meet the key players working towards this
transformation.
You will be expected to join the IMechE or IET and to participate in our Railway Engineering Graduate Scheme where you will
pick up competences counting towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.
Responsibilities
Whilst working for ATOC, you will be accountable for:
 Providing problem solving and analysis as and where required by the Engineering team.
 Tracking changes in all rolling stock standards for management by the Engineering team.
 Producing key performance indicators.
 Organizing knowledge sharing events for professional rolling stock Engineers (Colloquia).
 Managing and Administrating Engineering and business projects.
What do you need to qualify for this job?




To be studying 2nd or 3rd year of an IET or IMechE accredited degree.
To be self-motivated and enthusiastic with a professional approach to
business and conduct.
To have good written and verbal communication skills as well as
excellent organisational and time management skills.


To be experienced in collecting data, forming a
methodology for analysis and producing findings,
conclusions and recommendations.
To have experience of learning a system (be it
mechanical, electrical or software based)
understanding its inputs process and outputs
diagnosing performance issues and developing
solutions to address them.
