Westminster Rising
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE
HAS ALWAYS STOOD TALL—
AND TODAY CONTINUES
ITS CLIMB WITHIN THE
NATION’S TOP TIER LIBERAL
ARTS COLLEGES.
Westminster College is an
instrument of enormous
change. Our mission is to
transform individual lives,
which in turn transform
our communities, our
nation, and the world. We
do this one student at a
time. Our success in doing
so has endured since 1852.
In recent decades, strong
momentum has placed
Westminster on an upward
trajectory resulting in increased national recognition for
the quality of the education we offer, the human character
we develop, and the affordability we maintain. Still, we have
new heights to reach.
Our continuing ascension as an outstanding college
must be sustained, especially in these challenging times.
Westminster’s new 10-year strategic plan, Advantage:
Westminster, prescribes how this will be accomplished.
Now is the time for all of Westminster’s alumni and
friends to come together as one to take us ever higher.
This overview outlines the details and importance of
Westminster’s first comprehensive campaign in decades.
Our time is now. We invite you to be an instrument of
change for Westminster.
—Richard H. Dorman, D.Ed., President
Westminster Today
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE
HAS A RICH HERITAGE OF
PROVIDING AN EXCELLENT
LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION
WHILE SERVING AS A
REGIONAL RESOURCE.
As you approach Westminster College, and its beautiful and
historic campus rises into view, you remember that you are
in the midst of something special. Westminster is a college
steeped in the classic tradition of the liberal arts, where
rich learning experiences take place. Since our founding,
we have been true to this mission: Westminster is most
assuredly an excellent liberal arts college.
But we’re also something more.
Westminster has clearly distinguished itself by building on
the strong academic foundation that the liberal arts provide.
This foundation includes a breadth of study in the core
disciplines of science, the humanities, the social sciences,
business, education and the arts.
NINETY-SIX PERCENT OF GRADUATES ARE EMPLOYED OR IN GRADUATE SCHOOL
WITHIN A YEAR OF GRADUATION, AND GRADUATES ARE ACCEPTED INTO MEDICAL
SCHOOL AT TWICE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
“THE WESTMINSTER WAY”
The Westminster Way is a set of beliefs and values that
reinforce the importance of interpersonal respect and caring,
a commitment to our Mission Statement, and an adherence
to our historical and spiritual traditions that have made
Westminster such a positive place to teach, learn, and work
since 1852.

“WESTMINSTER COLLEGE IS ONE OF THE GREAT LOVES OF MY LIFE. I OWE SO MUCH
TO THE EDUCATION I RECEIVED AND TO THE MEMBERS OF THE WESTMINSTER
COMMUNITY WHOM I CONSIDER TRUE FRIENDS. THE COLLEGE HAS CHANGED THROUGH
THE YEARS, BUT IT HAS NEVER WAVERED FROM ITS CORE VALUES AND PRINCIPLES.”
—Dorothy J. Pollock ’46, RETIRED RESEARCH SCIENTIST
True to our Presbyterian roots and founding values,
Westminster has always held students to high personal
and academic standards while instilling in them a spirit of
service and a sense of civic responsibility.
Westminster students are intelligent and highly
motivated. They experience our hallmark interdisciplinary
approach to teaching and an orientation toward solving
real-world problems. We provide our students with
the practical skills to thrive no matter what they pursue
after graduation. We are not only educating students,
we are preparing them to lead lives as responsible and
engaged citizens.
Advantage: Westminster
DRAWING ON FOUR
STRATEGIC INITIATIVES,
THE COLLEGE HAS DEVELOPED
A SERIES OF GOALS TO
DRIVE ITS MOMENTUM IN
THE COMING DECADE.
In 2008, Westminster administrators, alumni, trustees,
faculty, staff, and students engaged in an intensive and
inclusive year-long planning process to determine ways to
place Westminster College on an upward trajectory and to
continue its growth in the region as a national model for
student-centered education. What emerged was Advantage:
Westminster, a 10-year strategic plan with four overarching
initiatives: to support our people, enhance our reputation,
remain affordable, and improve our campus.
We are acutely aware of the responsibility we have to
educate those who will return America to its global
leadership position, and we recognize the tremendous
opportunity we have to do so. Westminster College
offers a high-quality, affordable, private education while
remaining true to our founding values.
THE STRATEGIC PLAN POSITIONS WESTMINSTER AS THE LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE
OF THE 21ST CENTURY AND PROVIDES A BLUEPRINT TO PROACTIVELY RESPOND
TO OUR CHANGING WORLD.
Advantage: Westminster compels us to provide the best possible
experience for our deserving students—and to offer them to
a nation in need. Our future—society’s future—depends on
how we shape our tomorrow.
Ever Higher: The Campaign for Westminster College
With a powerful vision for our future in place, we must
now raise the necessary resources to reach our goals. Ever
Higher: The Campaign for Westminster College will allow us to both
achieve our strategic vision and fulfill our mission. The
campaign priorities, which correspond with the initiatives
in our strategic plan, include growing our endowment to
support students, faculty, and staff; improving facilities and
programs; and strengthening the Westminster Fund, the
College’s annual giving program.
“THE LIBERAL ARTS TAUGHT ME HOW TO THINK AND EXPAND MY HORIZONS,
AND MY WESTMINSTER PROFESSORS AND FELLOW STUDENTS DROVE ME TO
SUCCEED IN A CARING AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT OF EXPLORATION.
WESTMINSTER COLLEGE HAS CERTAINLY BENEFITTED FROM HAVING THE RIGHT
LEADERSHIP FOR THE RIGHT TIMES, AS WELL AS A CLEAR VISION TO FRAME
THIS EXTRAORDINARY EXPERIENCE.”

FOR OUR
Endowment
INCREASING OUR
ENDOWMENT IS THE
HIGHEST PRIORITY OF
EVER HIGHER: THE CAMPAIGN
FOR WESTMINSTER COLLEGE.
A robust endowment is one of the most important
elements necessary to guarantee our long-term future
as a premier teaching institution. We must increase
the size of our endowment so a Westminster education
remains affordable to students from across diverse
socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, a strong
endowment is instrumental to attracting and supporting
our stellar faculty.
Ever Higher: The Campaign for Westminster College seeks to
significantly increase endowed funds to provide student
scholarships, expand faculty development and academic
programs, and provide the necessary resources to make
certain that the academic bonds between teacher and
student remain strong.
“THE JOHN DEAVER AND ELIZABETH DRINKO CENTER
FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING IS AN
IMPORTANT RESOURCE AND A REAL STRENGTH OF
WESTMINSTER, PROVIDING LOGISTICAL SUPPORT
AND FUNDING FOR OUR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
PROGRAMS, SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS, AND
OUTREACH INITIATIVES.”

Westminster College has made great strides in improving
the campus in the last decade, yet significant additional
enhancements are needed. These include major renovations
to Patterson Hall and the Hoyt Science Resources Center
and new student townhouses in Berlin Village. Also,
improvements to the College’s athletic facilities and campus
beautification efforts as part of our new master landscape
plan will ensure the best possible learning and living
environment for our students.

FOR TODAY’S STUDENTS.
FOR TODAY’S PROGRAMS.
The Westminster Fund, the College’s annual giving
program, provides vital annual support for student
financial aid, academic departments, library resources,
and athletic programs.
Nearly 96 percent of our students receive some form of
financial aid. In fact, more than 33 percent of Westminster
students are eligible for Federal Pell Grant assistance
for lower income families. To provide the best possible
educational experience, the Westminster Fund must
continue to grow. Income from tuition covers only about
70 percent of a Westminster education, making scholarship
support one of the priorities of the Westminster Fund.
Gifts to the Fund bridge the gap between what students and
families pay and the actual cost of their education.
Alumni have always shown their pride in Westminster by
contributing to the Westminster Fund, and now more than
ever that tradition of giving back holds special meaning.
EVERY GIFT, OF EVERY SIZE, MAKES A LASTING
IMPACT ON THE WESTMINSTER COMMUNITY. IT’S
ALL PART OF OUR PROUD LEGACY OF GIVING BACK.

A MESSAGE FROM BOB PATTON ’50
Ever Higher!
“…TO HELP MEN AND WOMEN DEVELOP COMPETENCIES,
COMMITMENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS WHICH HAVE
DISTINGUISHED HUMAN BEINGS AT THEIR BEST.”
—From the Westminster College Mission Statement
When I was asked to chair Ever Higher: The Campaign for Westminster
College, I took it as both an honor and a singular opportunity.
During my time as a student at Westminster, I found
knowledgeable and caring men and women who challenged
me, motivated me, and pointed me toward success. Since
then, I have seen the value of my education confirmed many
times over. With each passing year, my gratitude for my
Westminster experience has continued to grow—as has my
desire to give back as fully as I received.
By participating in this campaign, we can all express our
appreciation for the benefits the College has brought—and
continues to bring—to each of us. Your gift will make a lasting
difference in the lives of bright, hard-working students and
in the future of this extraordinary institution. Join me in
helping Westminster achieve its full potential.
