SSW Alumnus in the News
Representative James Wayne, M.S.W.'78, D-Louisville, Kentucky, was recently honored as
Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers Kentucky Chapter during a
State Capitol rally celebrating March as "Social Work Month."
NASW Kentucky Executive Director Kip Bowman stated: "Representative Wayne has had some
incredible successes over the last 20 years including the development of the affordable housing
trust fund, which grew from a $100,000 pilot with no dedicated funding stream to a $5 million
annual program that provides affordable housing for thousands of people every year and
creates hundred of jobs in the construction field. Representative Wayne truly embodies the
values of the social wok profession."
The Affordale Housing Trust Fund, created by legislation sponsored by Representative Wayne in
1992 has helped produce more than 8,000 units of affordable housing in 93 Kentucky counties
since its inception.
Upon acceptance of the award, Representative Wayne said: "It's a tremendous honor to be
recognized by the social workers who provide life-changing services to individuals and families
thoughout the state. Some of the best moments of my legislative career have been working
side-by-side with social workers who provide hope to people who otherwise might not have
any."
Wayne has representated Kentucky's 35th House District in Louisville since 1991 and is the
founder and president of Wayne Corporation, a Louisville Kentucky based mental health
services provider.
