academic year. Funds are also available from the Robyn Rafferty Mathias gift to support

Dorothy and Victor Gondos Jr. Graduate Research Fellowship

the U.S. National Archives. Candidates should submit an application consisting of a 3page, single-spaced research proposal explaining the research question, describing briefly

and the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians co-sponsor annual competitions for a

Bruce Baky Valley Forge Fellowship

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship

CMH Dissertation Fellowship

Description: The purpose of this Fellowship is to support scholarly research and writing
among qualified civilian graduate students preparing dissertations in the history of
warfare, the Center offers three Dissertation Fellowships each year. One, funded by the
National Museum of the U.S. Army, is designed to support dissertations that explore the
material culture of the Army; the two others support research in the more general areas of
military history in all its many aspects. In your application please specify if you wish to
compete for the two general fellowships or for the Museums fellowship. These
fellowships carry a $10,000 stipend and access to the Center's facilities and technical
expertise.
For purposes of this program, the history of war on land is broadly defined, including
such areas as biography, military campaigns, military organization and administration,
policy, strategy, tactics, weaponry, technology, training, logistics, and the evolution of
civil-military relations. In the selection of proposals for funding, preference is given to
topics on the history of the U.S. Army. Topics submitted should complement rather than
duplicate the Center's existing projects. Applicants must have completed by September
all requirements for the Ph.D. degree, except for the dissertation . Any student who has
held or accepted an equivalent fellowship from any other Department of Defense agency
is not eligible for these awards. Individuals who accept a Center of Military History
fellowship may not accept a fellowship from any other institution for a period concurrent
with the Center's fellowship.

Conference on Latin American History James R. Scobie Award

Description: Up to $1500 is awarded each year for an exploratory research trip abroad to
determine the feasibility of a Ph.D. dissertation topic dealing with some facet of Latin
American history. One or more travel grants will be awarded each year.
The purpose of the award is to permit a short, exploratory research trip abroad (normally
four to twelve weeks) to determine the feasibility of a Ph. D. dissertation topic dealing
with some facet of Latin American history.
Up to five travel grants will be awarded each year. The funds are to be used only for
international travel expenses and may not exceed $1,500. The grant must be used during
the summer following the award, unless there is prior approval from the Award
Committee and the Secretariat of the Conference on Latin American History. Under no
circumstances is the award to be combined with a research grant for an extended stay.
Scobie awards may be used in combination with other funds as long as they are not for
international travel. The final report should indicate sources and amounts of all awards
received.

COSMOS Scholars Grants

Description: The program provides grants to meet specific research needs not covered by
other supporting funds, including but not limited to special supplies, travel, unanticipated
expenses that would enhance the work, and the like. Specifically excluded are general

There is no restriction as to academic field, but the project should be focused on objective
scholarly research rather than commercial or political activity, social activism, or other

Council of American Overseas Research Centers: Multi-Country Research Fellowship

Description: CAORC is pleased to announce the expansion of the Multi-Country
Research Fellowship Program. Starting with the 2010-11 cycle, U.S. citizens enrolled in a
master's degree granting program are eligible to apply for Multi-Country Research
Fellowship.
The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) Multi-Country
Fellowship Program supports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the
humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. master's students, doctoral
candidates, and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. Preference will be given to
candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible
to apply as individuals or in teams.
Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at
least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center.
Approximately ten awards of up to $12,000 each will be given in the doctoral
candidate/post-doctoral scholar competition. Approximately four awards of up to $8,000
each will be given in the master's student competition.

The Dirksen Center Congressional Research Awards

Description: The competition is open to individuals with a serious interest in studying
Congress. Political scientists, historians, biographers, scholars of public administration
or American studies, and journalists are among those eligible. The Center encourages
graduate students who have successfully defended their dissertation prospectus to apply
and awards a significant portion of the funds for dissertation research. Applicants must
be U.S. citizens who reside in the United States.
The awards program does not fund undergraduate or pre-Ph.D. study. Organizations are
not eligible. Research teams of two or more individuals are eligible. No institutional
overhead or indirect costs may be claimed against a Congressional Research Award.
Awards range from a few hundred dollars to $3,500. Stipends will be awarded to
individuals (not organizations) on a competitive basis. Grants will normally extend for
one year. In some circumstances, the Center will make more than one award to a single
individual in consecutive years, but not more than three awards to the same person in a
five-year period.

DPDF Student Fellowship Competition

Description: The Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship (DPDF) is organized to
help early-stage graduate students in the humanities and social sciences formulate
effective doctoral dissertation proposals. Each year, the program offers training within
different interdisciplinary fields of study under the leadership of pairs of tenured senior
faculty, who define the fields and serve as research directors for groups of 12 graduate
students. The students participate in two workshops: one in the spring, to prepare students
to undertake summer research that will inform the design of their dissertation research;
the other in the fall, to help students apply their summer research experiences to writing
dissertation and funding proposals. Students may apply for up to $5,000 to cover summer
research costs. Working together, research directors and graduate students design
research that will help to shape evolving fields in the humanities and social science. The
DPDF program is open to doctoral students in social science or humanities disciplines
who have completed their major course requirements and are beginning to design
research proposals. Students who have completed their comprehensive, general, or
qualifying exams are eligible to apply as long as their dissertation proposals will be
formally approved by their department after the fall DPDF workshop. Typically such
students will be second and third year graduate students, but first and fourth year student
may, under exceptional circumstances, be eligible.
Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a Ph.D. program within an accredited university
in the United States, unless indicated otherwise for a particular field. In the current
application cycle French students and foreign students enrolled in a French institution are
also invited to apply to participate in the field of "Multiculturalism, Immigration, and
Identity in Western Europe and the United States."

E. Rhodes And Leona B. Carpenter Fellowship in Early American Religious Studies

Eisenhower Foundation Travel Grants

Description: The Eisenhower Presidential Library Abilene Travel Grants Program assists
scholars' research of primary sources in such fields as history, government, economics,
communications, and international affairs so they may provide informed leadership in our
national life. The grants program is funded and administered by the Eisenhower
Foundation in Abilene, Kansas.
Grants are awarded to individual researchers on a competitive basis to cover a portion of
expenses while in Abilene, Kansas using the presidential library. The size of the grant
(not to exceed $1,000) is dependent upon the distance traveled and duration of stay in
Abilene. Grants are not retroactive and travel must occur within one year of award. If
grantee's research results in a thesis, dissertation, book or article, a copy of the final

It is designed to assist scholars early in their careers. At the time of application,
applicants must hold the Ph.D. degree or equivalent; must have received this degree
within the past seven years, and must not have published or had accepted for publication
a book-length historical work. The fellowship will not be awarded to complete a doctoral
dissertation. The applicant's project in American history must be one for which the
general and special collections of the Library of Congress offer unique research support.
Applicants should include a statement substantiating this relationship. The fellowship
will be awarded for 2–3 months, as the Jameson Fellow desires, to spend in full-time
residence at the Library of Congress. Working space will be provided by the Library of
Congress, but the Jameson Fellow is required to spend at least two months in residence.

OAH Japanese Residencies Program

Description: With the generous support of the Japan-United States Friendship
Commission, the OAH and the Japanese Association for American Studies (JAAS) plan
to send two American scholars to Japanese universities for two-week residencies from
June 1–14, 2011. During their residencies, the American historians give lectures and
seminars in English in their specialty. They also meet individually and in groups with
Japanese scholars, graduate students, and undergraduate students studying American
history and culture, and participate in the collegial life of their host institutions. The
purpose of this exchange program is to facilitate scholarly dialogue and contribute to the
expansion of scholarly networks among students and professors of American history in
both countries. We are pleased to announce (pending funding) the fifteenth year of the
competition.
Round-trip airfare to Japan, housing, and modest daily expenses are covered by the
award. Awardees are also encouraged to explore Japan before or after their two-week
residency at their own expense. Applicants must be members of the OAH, have a Ph.D.,
and be scholars of American history.
Applicants from previous competitions are welcome to apply again. Winners of the
competition are expected to attend the 2011 OAH Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, so
that they can meet with visiting Japanese scholars and graduate students as well as the
OAH/JAAS Historians’ Collaborative Committee.

Penn Humanities Forum Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Humanities

Description: The Penn Humanities Forum awards five one-year Andrew W. Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellowships each academic year to junior scholars in the humanities who are

The Fellowship carries an annual stipend of $46,500 plus health insurance and a $2500
research fund, requires that the scholar spend the year in residence at the University of
Pennsylvania, and is open to international applicants. The broad interdisciplinary nature
of the program allows fellows to become fully integrated into the life of Penn. Fellows
conduct research that relates to the Forum's topic of study for the year in residence,
participate in the Forum's weekly faculty research seminar where they present their
research, and teach one undergraduate course on a subject that relates to the annual
theme.

Renaissance Society of America Research Grants for Young Scholars

Description: The Brooke Hindle Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History of Technology
honors the contribution of Brooke Hindle to the work of the Society for the History of
Technology and is made possible thanks to the generosity of his family. The fellowship is

research or writing in the history of technology for a period of not less than four months

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship
