Emeriti Lounge in Neilson, Level B
The Emeriti Lounge in Nielson Library, Level B,
opened with a well-attended inaugural reception on
September 16, 2010.
If you were unable to be there, please stop by soon to
visit your large, sunny space with its comfortable
furniture and a coffee pot too (enter through the main
entrance of the library). It’s a great place for
meetings, small and large (but not too large), planned
or random; and a place to curl up with your laptop or
book.

There are 15 Emeriti carrels in Neilson Library:
five on level A, five on level B, and five above
the Emeriti Lounge. Each carrel has two
lockable cabinets and electrical outlets for light
and laptop use
If you no longer have an office on campus and
would like a pied-a-terre in the form of one of
the Emeriti carrels in or by the lounge, please
contact Danielle Ramdath, Associate Dean of the
Faculty.
Emeriti Advisory Committee
The Emeriti Advisory Committee is no longer ad hoc. Last spring, with
the help of Faculty Council, the Faculty voted to make it a standing
appointed committee, enshrined in the Faculty Code. The description in
the Faculty Code reads:
EMERITI ADVISORY COMMITTEE (appointed)
46. (a) The Emeriti Advisory Committee shall consist of the Associate Dean of the Faculty (nonvoting,
Chair), four emeriti faculty, and at least one member of the current faculty with a date certain for
retirement. The faculty members shall be appointed by the President with the advice of the Faculty
Council and, if possible, shall serve for staggered three year terms. Normally, each division will be
represented on the Committee.
(b) The Emeriti Advisory Committee shall provide a direct means of communication between emeriti faculty
and the administration. The Emeriti Advisory Committee shall serve as a forum for emeriti faculty ideas and
concerns; make recommendations about policy changes relevant to emeriti faculty; and provide advice to the
President, Provost, and/or planning committees about issues relevant to emeriti faculty. The Chair of the
Committee shall, when appropriate, report to the faculty.
Emeriti Events (held in the Emeriti Lounge)
Friday, December 10, 2010, 3 to 4 p.m.
The next event scheduled in the Emeriti lounge will be an Information Session with the College’s
Archivist, Nanci Young, on Friday, December 10, from 3 to 4 p.m. Nanci will speak on
"What To Do With All This Clutter? Guidance from the College Archives."
Not sure what to do with all of the files that have accumulated over your years of research and service
to the College? Find out what materials the College Archives is interested in adding to its collection to
help document teaching and faculty life at Smith. You don't have to keep everything, and not
everything was meant to be kept!
Spring 2011 Events
We’re planning three events for next semester, and if they work well, we will continue the format in
coming semesters. Each will be on a Thursday afternoon, from 4 to 5:30 pm.

by a question/answer period. Refreshments will be provided.

initiatives”
