Emeriti Events (held in Emeriti Lounge, Level B, Neilson Library) Works-in-Progress Lecture: Thursday, March 24, 2011, 4 to 5:30 p.m. Ancient Earthquakes and the Enigmatic Rocks at Barton Cove, Turners Falls, MA H. Robert Burger, Achilles Professor of Geology The origin of some very unusual and spectacular rocks exposed at Barton Cove, Turners Falls, Massachusetts, has been controversial for several decades. Recent work by myself and two undergraduate geosciences majors suggests that these rocks were formed by shaking forces from earthquakes that occurred while the rocks were still soft sediment. If confirmed, such rocks (termed seismites) would be the visible result of strong earthquakes that occurred some 200 million years ago in the Connecticut Valley. This talk will illustrate the rocks we believe represent seismites and present the evidence for this interpretation.
