Space Survey due April 22nd
The Provost’s office will soon send out a survey of space
needs for Emeriti faculty members. We ask that you fill out
and return the survey to Hayley Spizz by April 22nd.
Unfortunately, the College can no longer provide private
offices for all Emeriti faculty members, but we will do our
best to meet the needs of active Emeriti in need of
workspace. Your answers to this survey, along with last
year’s data, will enable us to determine how to meet the
needs.

Ancient Earthquakes and the Enigmatic Rocks at Barton Cove, Turners Falls, MA
H. Robert Burger, Achilles Professor of Geology
The origin of some very unusual and spectacular rocks exposed at Barton Cove, Turners Falls,
Massachusetts, has been controversial for several decades. Recent work by myself and two
undergraduate geosciences majors suggests that these rocks were formed by shaking forces
from earthquakes that occurred while the rocks were still soft sediment. If confirmed, such
rocks (termed seismites) would be the visible result of strong earthquakes that occurred some
200 million years ago in the Connecticut Valley. This talk will illustrate the rocks we believe
represent seismites and present the evidence for this interpretation.
Information Session: Thursday, April 21, 2011, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
