PORTUGAL LISBON Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a city with privileged natural conditions, and its situation and climate have from the earliest times attracted a variety of peoples and cultures. Its ancient history is reflected in its monuments, some of them imposing and rich others only suggestive, but all of them enchanting. The quarters of Castelo or Alfama, the whole Belém zone, the Baixa (downtown centre), are only a few of the places where, besides those monuments, one comes upon unmistakable traces of those civilizations that have passed this way. For those who like especially to go out at night, Lisbon is undoubtedly the right choice. One can listen to the melancholic refrains of the Fado in a cosy typical restaurant, enjoy the throb of the craziest discothèques, opt for the friendly atmosphere of a pub or the sophisticated environment of certain bars and restaurants, spend the evening listening to Opera or Rock, Jazz or live Brazilian and African music, and join the bohemian life in the outdoor cafes in the Docklands Area. Whatever the choices, one will always find that the nights in Lisbon have a unique and irresistible flavour.
