PROGRAM OVERVIEW American University’s Public Service Work Study Program is a win-win for students, partner organizations, and the Washington, D.C., area residents they serve. Students gain substantive work experience and earn Federal Work Study awards as part of their financial aid packages. Partner organizations fortify their staff with talented student employees at a fraction of the cost. Recruiting AU Work-Study Eligible Students Positions are posted to our online job board. Student applications are emailed directly to hiring manager(s). In addition to these postings, it is a good idea to have a presence on campus by attending the fall work-study job fair or hosting an information table or session. If you are interested in more active on-campus recruiting options, contact Student Employment Coordinator, Jared Heino at heino@american.edu or 202-885-1807. Once you have found the student(s) you want to hire, complete the on-line “Public Service Work Study Hire Form”. The Career Center will contact the student(s) with instructions on how to complete the hiring process. Please note that they cannot start until they have been cleared. Managing Student Staff Students hired into the AU system can start working with your organization. Students submit electronic time sheets and are paid on a bi-weekly basis by American University. A full-time staff person at your organization should be assigned to supervise the student(s) and approve time sheets. During the fall and spring semesters, an average student schedule ranges between 10-12 hours week and can up to 20 hours a week. Being students, their work schedule should not conflict with classes and they may need some flexibility during exam periods. See the “Key Dates and Deadlines” for dates that may impact scheduling. We encourage students in this program to be professional and plan for Cost-Sharing Annually, more than 1,000 students receive work-study awards. Undergraduates typically receive $1800 workstudy awards for the fall and spring semesters ($900 for each semester). American University Partner organizations are invoiced at the end of each semester for 25% of student earnings. Included find the “Partner Forms Checklist” for forms you need to complete and/or keep for your reference. Thank you for participating in the Public Service Work Study Program. We look forward to working with you this academic year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Jared Heino directly at heino@american.edu or by phone at 202-885-1807.
