MEMORANDUM August 1, 2014 To: American University Community From: Dan Nichols, Executive Director University Safety Programs Subject: Parking Task Force Recommendation Implementation ______________________________________________________________________________ As the fall semester quickly approaches, additional vehicles will soon be returning to campus. This year, we will be operating without the additional parking spaces that were on the Nebraska Lot. This change will require us to optimize the remaining parking spaces in the lots and garages across campus. To that end, as President Kerwin referenced in his memo dated July 24, the University Parking & Transportation Task Force, comprised of representatives from across the campus, completed a comprehensive set of recommendations to manage the existing parking inventory. Over the coming weeks, the Department of Public Safety will be implementing those recommendations with the assistance of its campus partners. This is the first in a series of memorandums to the AU community that explains the changes and prepares AU to optimize parking for all who drive to campus. Updates regarding the implementation of each of the recommendations will be sent over the next several weeks. Faculty & Staff Parking All faculty & staff monthly parking permit stickers (purchased via payroll deduction) will be replaced between September 1 and September 12, 2014. Current monthly parking permit stickers will expire on September 15, 2014. Permit distribution locations and times will be announced in a future communication. All faculty & staff monthly parking permit hangtags (purchased via cash, check or credit) will expire on the date indicated on the hangtag. Student Parking Commuter student parking permits are available for purchase beginning on August 18, 2014. Current summer commuter student parking permits expire on August 15, 2014. Campus Parking Signs Campus parking signs will be replaced over the next several weeks. Please be aware that parking designations may change. An updated parking map is under development and will be posted to american.edu/parking soon. Good Neighbor Parking Policy As a reminder, American University’s Good Neighbor Parking Policy remains in effect for all faculty, staff, students, contractors and visitors. Parking is prohibited on all neighborhood streets while attending class, working or visiting any university property. University-affiliated vehicles parked on neighborhood streets are subject to a $100.00 fine. The Good Neighbor Parking Policy was developed to comply with DC Zoning Commission Orders. The University must honor the requirements detailed in Zoning Commission Orders to maintain compliance with the conditions of its Campus Plan. The Good Neighbor Parking Policy is available at: http//:www.american.edu/finance/publicsafety/parking/neighbor.cfm. Additional Information & Questions By mid-August, more information will be available on Public Safety’s Parking & Traffic Services web page at American.edu/parking.
