Spring 2015 Faculty & Staff Development ACADEMIC ADVISING WORKSHOPS SCHEDULE FEBRUARY 26 FROM 1-4PM LOWER LEVEL OF MAUCKER UNION & CME Session 1 1:00 - 1:50pm Career Purpose 101 Presenters: David Marchesani, Associate Director, Office of Academic Advising Jonathan West, Group Leader, Target Corporation Location: Center for Multicultural Education (CME) The foundation of “Career Purpose” is to have a sense of self-identity - which includes an understanding of skills, strengths, values, passions, and purpose. With this context, an individual can make intentional decisions and find ways to be meaningfully engaged both in and outside of the classroom. Furthermore, employers look for new graduates with a diversity of personal, team, thought, and leadership abilities. Students, when looking for employment after graduation, must be able to talk from the “I” perspective and demonstrate connections from past experiences and opportunities to succeed in a potential employment position. In Career Purpose 101, the concepts and idea of career branding and career readiness – in particular focusing on an awareness and understanding of self – will be presented and discussed from both a higher educational/student development and employer perspective. STUDY ABROAD 101 Presenter: Stephanie Miller, Student Support Specialist, Study Abroad Center Location: Elm Room Com e and Go! This session will inform academic advisors on how to guide students interested in studying abroad: Benefits, Types of Programs, When to travel, Insurance, Resources, Cost, Scholarship, Financial Aid, etc. Session 2 2:00 - 2:50pm Career Readiness: Employer Perceptions of Students’ Skills, Qualities, and Qualifications Moderators: David Marchesani, Associate Director, Office of Academic Advising Matthew Nuese, Associate Director, Career Services Location: Center for Multicultural Education (CME) In addition to major, employers seek a diversity of attributes and qualities. Employers are looking for team players who have the ability to solve problems, organize their work, and communicate effectively, according to respondents of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook 2015 survey. In this session, Career Services will discuss trends we see among successful students in pursuing their “First Destination,” as well as present effective strategies for students seeking to gain experience. UNI Transfer Students Presenters: Kristin Moser, Senior Research Analyst, Institutional Research Kristin Woods, Assistant Dean of Students/New Student Programs, Dean of Students Office Location: Elm Room This session will include up-to-date research on the demographics of our UNI transfer student population, along with factors that predict transfer student success. Participants will engage in discussion about how this research could inform advising practices on our campus. Financial Aid Considerations When Advising Presenters: Tim Bakula, Associate Director, Financial Aid Location: Oak Room Ever wonder how dropping and withdrawing from classes can impact current and future aid eligibility for a student? Tim Bakula, UNI Associate Director of Financial Aid, will offer information on how dropping and withdrawing from classes can impact a student's financial aid during that semester, as well as potentially future semesters. Academic progress standards for financial aid will also be highlighted to assist students in retaining their financial aid eligibility.
