Developing Trusting Relationships in Academic Advising “Time and time again, research has demonstrated one of the most significant contributors to success and retention in college is the establishment of POSITIVE relationships between students and college faculty and/or staff” (Nutt, 2003). Once advisors establish trust, this creates a supportive foundation improving students’ willingness to converse openly. The ability to build trust is based on one’s character, competence, and authentic way of being (Sankar, 2003). Steps to Developing Trust throughout the Advising Process 1. Be prepared for the advising appointment. 2. Create a good first impression by welcoming the student and conveying interest. 3. Build rapport throughout the conversation. 4. Use effective listening to understand, interpret and respond accordingly. 5. Understand needs, desires and/or concerns of the student. Then an advisor can use multiple approaches to advise the student. 6. Wrap up the meeting and remind the student of actions the advisor and the student are both responsible for. 7. Follow up with commitments. Student Involvemment How can students get involved? It is important for students to improve and build on their experiences.
