One Networks’ Energy Management System upgrade
New EMS helps secure power reliability and fulfill regulatory requirements in
Ontario, Canada

AREVA’s Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Division has delivered an important system upgrade to
Hydro One Networks Inc., the largest operating subsidiary of Hydro One Inc., which is wholly owned by
the Canadian Province of Ontario. The new energy management system (EMS) is based on AREVA
T&D’s renowned e-terra™ application suite and is running at Hydro One’s primary control center in
Barrie, Ontario and its backup control center in Richview, a neighborhood of Toronto, Ontario. The

system monitors and controls 97 per cent of Ontario's electricity transmission system, covering over 1
million square kilometers.
Hydro One now benefits from all the features of e-terraplatform version 2.5, which includes essential
elements to help utilities comply with North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC’s) Critical
Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. NERC CIP standards define the minimum requirements to
enable a reliable electrical system and all North American organizations involved with the electrical
network are subject to them.
